SUMMER GOLF

SOME GOOD ROUNDS IN MIRAMAR TOURNEY PROGRESS OF CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION DRAKE AND PETLEY TO MEET IN FINAL Fortune again smiled upon the New Year tournament of the Miramar Golf Club yesterday. The weather was perfect and the fairways and greens were in apple-pie order for the second day’s P1 Somc really good golf was witnessed in the third round and semi-finals of the championship competition. A Brilliant Bound. Harold Black was in brilliant form in the third round of his match with W. Flanagan. Out in 35, be was 4up at the turn, and he went on strongly to take the match by 6 and 4. His Return journey was done in 38. which gave him 73 for the round. His card read :— Out: 44u3405a4 — In: 543425465—38 73 Equally brilliant form was produced by J. H. Drake in his match with L. D. Hurst in the semi-final in the afternoon. Out in 34, Drake was 7 up at the turn, and went on to sink a 22ft. putt for a 2 at the twelfth, which gave him the match by the wide margin of S up and ' 6to play. The quality of the golf Drake was playing can be imagined when it is stated that he was 1 under 4’s for the J2 holes played, and that a horrible 6 at the tenth'hole figured on his card. J. L. Petley, another Miramar shorthandieap man, was also in good form. In the morning he eliminated L. Gorton, of Feildihg, by 4 up arid 2 to play, and bettered this in the afternoon bv outplaying such a strong opponent as Harold Black by the wide margin of 5 up and 3 to go. . ■ ,

The final for the championship will be fought out to-day over 36 holes between Drake and I’etley, and the game should furnish some high-class golf, us both men are right on their game. Results are as follow; — THE CHAMPIONSHIP THIRD ROUND. D. D. Hurst (Miramar) beat R. Wagg (Hutt). 2 up. J. 11. Drake (Miramar) beat F. J. Christensen (Marton), 5 and 4. H. A. Black (Miramar) beat W. Flanagan (Miramac), 6 and 4. J. D. Tetley (Miramar) beat L. Gorton (Feilding), 4 and 2. THE SEMI-FINALS, J. 11. Drake beat L. D. Hurst, S and 6. J. L. Petley beat 14. A. Black; 5 and 3. Drake in Form. Considerable interest centred in the meeting of the two Miramar men, J. IL Drake and L. D. Hurst, in the semi-final yesterday afternoon, islboth men had produced high-class golf-tifp to this stage of the championship competition. ■ Both men missed short putts on the first green, where Hurst threw away the hole by failing to sink one of less than a foot, the hole going to Drake in u to 6. Drake hit such a booming drive off the third tee that he was able to reach the green with his mashie second at a 495-yard hole, which he took in 4 to 5. Taking his iron, Drake laid , his tee shot in the centre of the green at the fourth hole, while Hurst put bis spoon tec shot into the bunker to the left of the green. Hurst, could do nothing right, as he badly, duffed his mashie second at “The Lupins,” from a good lie, and placed bis tee shot at the short sixth in the bunker above the green. Drake, on the other hand, was as steady as a rock. He landed his tee shot on the green at “Potiki,” and ran down a 20ft. putt for a brilliant two. Both played erratically at the tricky “Hillside,” which has been the grave of many a promising card. • Drake sliced into the rough, but Hurst failed to take advantage of this mistake by slicing his brassie second on to the hillside, and a half in five went down on the cards. At “The Flax” (280 yards) Drake landed his tee shot with a following wind on the edge of the green, and took the hole in 3 to 4. Placing like a machine. Drake got a spanking drive at the ninth, and landed his second with an iron on the green. He went on to beat both his opponent and Colonel Bogey nt this 430-yard hole by recording a,brilliant 4. He was out in 34 to Hurst's 42, and had the commaudng lead of 7 up. The best Hurst, could do was to halve the second in four, and the seventh in

5. Drake’s out journey read: 544342534. His 34 lor 3010 yards was four better than bogey, and two. under fours. Drake played kis first bad bole at the tenth, where he pulled his shot into the rough’, was too.strong with his iron third, and made a weak approach. Hurst duffed his second, and faulty short work saw the hole halved in horrible 6’s. Drake bad a bit of luck at the eleventh, as his badlysliced drive struck the bank- guarding the bi ■ drain, and bounced baek on to the fairway. Drake played a good iron second. and managed to secure a half in 5, which plneed him dormy 7. The end came at ‘“Coates’ Fancy” (175 yards), where Drake took a mashie with the following wind, and landed liis tee shot 22 feet from lhe pin. He settled the match in dramatic fashion by sinking the putt for a sensational 2. and thus took the game bv 8 up. and 6to play. Drake had taken 47 for tile twelve holes, and was thus one under 4’s. They finished out the round, which J)rako completed in 74, taking 40 for the run home. Pel ley v. Black. Most people fancied Harold Black’s chances in his game in the other semifinal with .1. L. Petley, but the latter once again proved that lie lias the temperament for match play. Starting off with a 6 at the first hole. Petley settled down, and played so steadily for the remainder of the. out journey that he turned for home with a lead of 2 up. Petley took 38 to Black’s 39 for the run out. Both were a bit wiki starting on the home journey, the tenth ami eleventh being halved in 6 and 5. Petley drew 3 up by taking “Coates’ Fancy” in 3 to 4, and ho made it 4 up by annexing “The Outlook” in 4 to 5. Both phyyed faulty tee shots at “The Lawn,” but managed to record a half in 3 by both running down putts of about ISft. The end came at “The Gap,” where Petley followed up a beautiful drive by placing his iron second on the green, and taking the hole in 4 to 5. and the match by 5 up and 3 to play. They finished the round, which Petley accomplished in 78, taking 40 for the run home.
