MIDNIGHT CHASE

SMART CAPTURE BY CONSTABLE MEN FOUND IN STATION Dominion Special Service Nelson, December 30. A smart arrest was made by Constable E. F. Smith about midnight last night, when after a long chase round the- railway yards and in Gloucester Street, a capture was effected of a man who is alleged to have broken into the Nelson railway offices but -who had been disturbed by the constable before the till had been opened. Constable Smith was on duty in the vicinity of the railway station at midnight. Hearing a noise in the offices, he went to investigate, and as.he flashed his electric torch into the office a man ran out of the door, and, throwing down a large iron bar in front of the constable, fled for the railway yard. A long chase ensued round the railway trucks, ending eventually in Gloucester Street, where the man was caught and arrested. The man arrested was Alexander Kyle, aged 24. A further arrest was made later of Lewis Arthur Courtney, aged 20. who at the time of the arrest was in bed in a boarding house in Nelson. It is alleged that entry had been gamed to the station by forcing open one of the windows on the station platform, and apparently the two men were busily engaged when Constable Smith disturbed tllCm. _ , TA Both men, who are Public Works Department employees from Newton i<lat, were charged with breaking into the railway station this morning, and remanded until January 13.
