MUTINY ON CRUISER EMDEN

SAILORS HOIST RED FLAG STARVATION RATIONS COMPLAINED OF Berlin, December 29. The Communist newspapers “Rote Fahne” and “Welt am Abend" both give a sensational account of a mutiny on the cruiser Emden. They declare that it occurred at the beginning of December, and was kept a secret. The accounts state that the officers were constantly banqueted in various ports visited, while the sailors were on starvation rations. The sailors demanded the abandonment of the cruise, and an immediate return. During the discussion the sailors hoisted the Red Flag, and forced the officers to order the cruiser home before Christmas, whereas she was due in March. When she entered Wilhelmshafen the crew were arrested, chained, and removed to ft marine prison. Two were convicted and gaoled. Authoritative sources discredit the story, but agree that a few days before “The Internationale” Wits sun. Those responsible were courtmartialled.
