Overseas Boats at Auckland. —■ A special message from Auckland states that two overseas liners arrived at Auckland yesterday, the Aorangi from Vancouver and the Rangitata from London; The large influx of visitors on board will add to the congestion at the Auckland hotels. The Aorangi arrived in the afternoon and the Rangitata at 9 o’clock the same night. The Rangitata will not berth until to-day.
Declining Italian Birthrate.—Despite the Government’s propaganda, the Italian birth rate for nine months shows a decline of 29,460. compared with the corresponding period of last year, states a Press Association message from Rome.
Constable Charged with Theft.—Ernest Simonsen, a police constable at Prahran, has been arrested and charged with the theft of £l7l. theatre takings left at the Prahran police station on Thursday night for safekeeping, states a Press Association message from Melbourne. He has been remanded till January 7.
Death from Thirst.— Naked and with a large wound in his wrist, from which he had sucked his own blood in an effort to save himself from death hy thirst, the body of William Garems was found on a bush track near Townsville, Queensland, a few days ago. His emaciated horse was seen near a dry waterhole, and searchers, following the horse’s tracks, found the body.—-Press Assn.
Shooting Fatality.—A single man. John Pringle, aged 55. of Green Island, was found dead, on Friday about two miles from Green Island. A bullet wound in his throat indicated that deceased, who had been rabbiting, had accidentally shot himself while negotiating a fence. An inquest was opened this morning, and was adjourned sine die.—Press Assn. I
