THE RACING WORLD

MANAWATU MEETING CONTINUED HOYLAKE AND FULL FEATHER AVIN PRINCIPAL HANDICAPS PAGANELLI DEFEATED IN THE STAKES ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY AT AUCKLAND (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Palmerston North, December 27. Riccarton stables triumphed at Awapuni to-day, when Hoylake won the principal race, while Full Feather and Silver Coot, both trained on the southern track, fought out a great finish in the open sprint. The weather was very rough and stormy, a heavy nor’west gale raged all day, but fortunately rain did not fall till about ten minutes before the last race. The track was much drier for seven races than it was yesterday. Some exciting racing was witnessed, the handicapper (Mr. J. Hcnrys) excelling himself. Backers had a disastrous day, the best the favourites could do being to run one second and one dead-heat for second. Speculation held up well, the total for the day being £34,105 as against £33,777, an increase of £328.

The hack distance event wag again won by Balloon in good style after being freely used, the favourite, Make Up, being relegated to fourth place. Kilorell, Viuella, Make Up and Shortly led out of the straight, Goldlike being slow away. There was not much change in the leading order till five furlongs from home, when Skyrider and Balloon moved up, Shortly, Skyrider and Balloon running abreast round the home turn from Make Up, Vinella and Goldlike. Balloon was out clear entering the straight, with Shortly, Skyrider, Make Up, Goldlike and Mothplane crowding after him. Balloon hung on and beat Goldlike by a head, with Moth plane a length away. Make Up was fourth, followed by Plane, Shortly, Kirlana, and Kilorell. _ _ ~ , , . No .excuses can be made for the defeat of Make Up. Mothplane again came from well back. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Warzone created a great surprise in the Htghwelght bv uowning the favourite Democratic, but the grey mare Mirabilary was a good thing beaten by indifferent horsemanship. Aurora Borealis and Marzone led through the straight from Nightdew, Fierv Comet and Pole Star. Dow-n the back Nightdew led from Warzone, Pole Star, and Fine Acre, with Mlrabilnry lighting for his head In last place. Mirabilary made a fast run from the five furlongs, and on the turn the order was Nightdew, Mirabilary. Warzone and • Democratic. Once'in line Warzone and Democratic challenged Mirabilary, Warzone beating Democratic by half a length, with Mirabilary fl head away. Fine Acre was fourth, with Fiery Comet, Nightdew and Aurora Borealis next. , . . , Mirabilary should never have been beaten. Nightdew, a four-year-old half-sister by Nightraid to Royal Star, ran a fair race. HIGHDEN HANDICAP. ' The favourites were again beaten by an outsider in the Hack Spring, when Statuary scored from Fernden and Glenartney. Glenartney was first out, and joined by Leisure, they had charge from Fernden, Hunting Boy and King Acre. King Acre was right up forward on. the turn, with Statuary becoming prominent. Glenartney was still clear of Fernden and Statuary when well fe line, but Statuary finished stoutly and neat Fernden by a length and a half, Glenartney a similar distance avaj third, with Hunting Boy fourth, then Leisure and King Acre. • . Glenartney had every chance, and as at Woodville weakened at the finish. . lira dep was crowded entering the straight, it may have cost him the race, but it 1 doubtful, as Statuary finished very well and put up an excellent performance. ' PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. The handicapper P( odu(:ed a „ finish in the principal race, the first four horses going across the line divided by heads, victory finally resting with Unhorse that stuck best— Hoylake. Kuanui was a firm favourite. s- a r Area. First Acre, Paitonu and 1 iuthair were prominent in the early stages and there was no material change till the live furlongs, when Hoylake took up a prominent position, the order past the halt and on to l ?he turn being. Dolomite and Star Area from Hoylake, First Acre Paitonu. stanchion, Kuanui and Great Cbw rater L Stanchm O n J and Kuanui all battered their supporters. In a battling m Hovlake beat Kuanui by a short nea i, with First Acre a head back another heal ?n front of stanchion. Star Area and Great Charter were next, the last pair be Ing Dolomite and Paitonu. O „ no .i n r Hovlake owed his win to super ftamina. The feature of the race was the wonderful showing of btauchion.pho »till. however, unruly at the barrier. PALMERSTON NORTH STAKES. That there are no certainties in racing was forcibly brought home to backers xvh4»n Paganelli was defeated in th-weiglit-for-age event, and that after Ing every chance. Chrysology. 1 Betty, Paganelli, Miss Ransom Val ran bunched for a furlong. Ad mil al Drake beginning very slowly and Consent losing ground At the end of a couple of furlongs Chrysology and Princess l>cuy had drawn clear of Paganelli and. Roundelay was well up on the turn, but finished well back. Phastar ran a creditable race. HIMATANGI HANDICAP. The second class handicap maintained the ill-fortune of the favourites, Teri being soundly beaten. High Falutin lost erbund at the start, Barneses, Rory Mor, Cerf and Borsalene leading out of the straight, Kory Mor wide out. When settled down Raineses led from Kory Mor and Cerf, with High Falutin’ and Don Jose making runs up the back. Ou tire t ,irn and' into the straight the order was Kory Mor. High Falutin’, Don Jose, Ramoses, Manlv. and Cerf all bunching. A fine race home saw Kory Mor get up on the fence and win by a nock from High Falutin, with Manly a head away. Cert was fourth, followed by Borsalene, Teri, and Don °i-Hgh Falutin’ looked unlucky. AWAPUNI HANDICAP. The day finished in heavy rain and a complete record of eight disasters for the favourites, Keddar being unplaced in the open sprint, while Gold Dawn, almost as well backed, could only run third. Silver Coot, Dobbin, Gold Dawn, and Royal Duke began best, and at the end of a furlong Silver Coot drew out from Dobbin, Gold Dawn and Koyal Duke. At the half Full Feather moved up from a handy position, and the order on the turn was Silver Coot. Gold Dawn. Dobbin. Royal Duke, and Full Feather. Silver Coot turned for home first, and was almost immedintel.v joined by Full Feather. The latter drew out at the last furlong, but Silver Coot gam* again, and Pull Feather, Ln a

battling finish, won by a long bead. Gold Dawn was a length and a half back third, with Juggle fourth, then Royal Duke, Keddar, and Dobbin. The heavy rain was an advantage to the winner. Silver Coot showed great speed, and this Riccarton pair were too good for the opposition. DETAILS OF THE RACING KELVIN HACK HANDICAP, of 175 sovs.; second 35 sovs., and third 15 sovs. from the stake. WINNER OF MANAWATU CUP COMPULSORY CHANGE OF PLANS “Seatown is reported to be weatherbound from New Plymouth, but be may arrive to-morrow.” It has been pointed out that the paragraph quoted above from our special racing correspondent at Auckland, which was published in “The Dominion” on Thursday, gave rise to a certain amount of confusion in the minds of those Interested in the decision of the Auckland Cup. The facts, however, were made clear by “The Watcher” in his report of the Manawatu meeting, aud are quite simple. It was originally intended to send Seatown to Auckland, but owing to the steamer engaged in the Oneliunga-New Plymouth service becoming bar-bound at the northern port, it was impossible for the horse to reach Ellerslie in time to take his plnee in the Cup field. Tlie plans were then altered, and Seatown was at the last moment railed to Awapuni. where he successfully contested the race for the Manawatu Cup.
