FIRE ON LINER
PRESIDENT VAN BUREN’S CARGO DAMAGED ' Singapore, December 26. Fifty passengers were roused from sleep at 3 o’clock in the morning and ordered ashore, following an outbreak of fire in the round-the-world liner President Van Buren alongside the wharf. The fire originated in the boiler room, spread to the hold, and destroyed £9OOO worth of rubber, while another £6OOO worth was damaged by water. The President Van Buren leaves for New York to-morrow. [The President Van Buren Is a steamer of 10,533. tons, built in 1920 by the New York shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, N.J., and owned by the Dollar Line.] TELEGRAPH DISMISSALS RESULT OF RECENT INQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 27. It is reported that as the result of the recent inquiry six employees of the Telegraph Department at Auckland have been dismissed.
