ST. NICHOLAS, THE FAIRY

Up the hill and down the dale, Riding fast on the back of the quail, Comes St. Nicholas the fairy, Ever so dainty and airy. His steed is laden with fairs so gay; Joys to gladden a sadder day; His work is to bring comfort and cheer, With 'the secret of happiness year by year. Elves bring the news of a saddened heart; Then the good St. Nicholas does his part, A good turn here, a whispered word there; Leaving the conscience without a care. Up the hill and down the dale, Riding fast on the back of the quail, Comes St. Nieholos the cheery, With good work to do yearly. —By Doris Court, Woodville (aged 13 years)
