DUNEDIN CITY ORGANIST

PROTEST AT MR. PAGET GALE’S

APPOINTMENT.

Dominion Special Service.

Dunedin, December 20.

The City Council on Wednesday night appointed Mr. Paget Gale as city organist, the decision being reached by a narrow margin of six votes to five. The appointment occasioned a good deal of surprise, and already an emphatic public protest has been voiced by the members of the Advisory' Committee which was set up in connection with the matter, and which includes the donor of the organ.

It is pointed out by the Advisory Committee that it recommended the appointment of Dr. V. E. Galway, or, failing him, one of the two Melbourne applicants for the position, and that this recommendation has been virtually ignored. The commitlee strongly criticises the action of the council, and there is no doubt that a very strong body of opinion supports that criticism. A member of the City Council has already lodged a notice, of motion moving for the rescission of the resolution by which Mr. Gale was appointed.
