GIVING ENGLAND THE “ONGE-OVER”

U.S. TRAVEL AGENTS ON A RUSH TOUR Twenty-six determined - looking young men from the United States are rushing on a sight-seeing tour through England, Wales and Scotland, even grudging the minutes they have to give to rest and refreshment. It cannot be truthfully said that they are enjoying themselves, but then, it was never intended that they should. They are not doing it for pleasure, but for business and a rigorous business it is. Another tourist season is approaching and these men—travel agents from 18 States—are trying to plan an itinerary which will appeal to prospective clients. New York is not represented. Of what use when New Yorkers are given to the belief that they can make their own plans?

Being experts, they can size .up a town merely by giving it the “onceover,” and when they return home to begin “selling England” they will have all the choicest selections to offer. The agents expect to be away from home six weeks, during which time they will travel 5000 miles, seeing Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Holland and Switzerland. Two of the six Greeks are being spent in this country. Hustle? Listen, this is what they saw yesterday: Morning: Everything of interest in London, Afternoon: Eton, Windsor, the Thames,' and other notable places in the environs of London.

Mr- E. V. Cherry, the manager of the tour, told a “Dally News” reporter that they visited Westminister Abbey because it would fit in .with “Mrs. Smith’s” conception of an ideal feature of her tour. Similarly, they had been to Paris because “Mr. Perkins” might want a tour with plenty of boulevards in it. , “You can’t offer sweets to a man who chews twist,” he added, drily. London has .made two very good friends. They were not pleased with the Continent. They could see'nothing striking anywhere. But yesterday, at lunch, after the rush round London, they smiled for the first time and said together: “You have shown us a city.” ■ s r i They have made a note of London.
