THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

“Reader,” Atasterton: T. Green headed the list of winning jockeys twice, in 1926-27 and in 1927-28. In the former season he was an apprentice. The four-year-old hay gelding Arikiihii (Chief Ruler —Celmisia) has been purchased from Mr. J. B. Gaisford by Mr. J. J. McGrath, of Wellington. R. E. Coveny will ride Courageous in the Manawatu Cup. W. Griffith went north on Thursday with White Fang and Royal Parade. Also on board the same train were V. H. Collelo with Shrewd and W. McKinnon with Toxeuma. F. Davis has cancelled his accommodation at Ellerslie for Great Charter and Chrysology,. who will race at Awapuni. Seatown will do his holiday racing at Auckland. He is well treated in the Cup with 7.1, but the difficulty may be to secure a rider. H. Wiggins is being inquired for. but he has a prior engagement for Shrewd. It ivas not intended to send Cimabue to Auckland with Concentrate, but his good showing at Hawera, coupled with the failures of Lady Quex and Havering, caused a change in plan and unless another change occurs the Leighton gelding will run in the Railway Handicap. He will be hard to beat. J. Brown will go to Auckland with Silvermlne, Chief Ruler and Awaken. Ah already announced, L. J. Ellis will ride Silvermlne in the Railway Handicap. So far no rider has been secured for Rabbi in the Manawatu Cup. but there will be no difficulty in securing a suitable horseman at the weight. M. Gardner has Star Area looking particularly well. The Acre gelding was not suited by the soft track at Hawera, but the gallop will do him good. Star Area will make an attempt next week to win his second Manawatu Cup. Up to date no rider has been definitely engaged. 'There is a possibility that A. E. Ellis may bo on hand, Toxeuma being his only ride at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, but in the mean- ■ time A. Hobson is the most likely to get the mount. Star Area may not w-in his second Cup, but he will get some good money during the holidays. J. H. Jefferd scratched all his horses for their second day’s engagements at Hawera on account of the going and went home en route to Auckland. The horses, Star Stranger, Cylinder, Knightlike and Hunting Day left Hawera for Auckland direct. Jefferd was rather anxious to give Cylinder another race before Ellerslie as the Limond colt is such a great doer. Rabbi may not start in the Manawatu

Cup. Bright Glow has struck form again and looks sure to get a good stake during the holidays. The Manawatu Cup may prove a trifle far for her, though she cannot be left out of calculations. L. G. Morris will ride Cashier in the Manawatu Cup. R. E. Coveny will be riding at Tauhcrenikau on January 1 and 2. It was found necessary to destroy Bonhomme, following upon his breakdown in the hurdle race on the opening day at Hawera. Egmont had a poor meeting financially. The weather was unfavourable, but it looked as if the change of dates was a contributory factor so far as finance was concerned. Taranaki is well served with holiday racing, so that the experiment of racing the week before Christmas is not likely to be repeated. Fortunately the Egmont Racing Club is in a sound position and can weather a reverse that would mean serious consequences for the majority of other minor bodies. First Acre ran a creditable race in the Egmont Cup on ground not to his liking. He should get some money during the holidays. Paitonu was backed and beaten at Hawera on Thursday. He looked a bit lusty to the eye. though his connections were satisfied with him, and he may do better next time an<J on a firmer track. Those who have been elevating Lady Quex to the position of pre-post favourite for the Auckland Railway Handicap cannot be on good terms with themselves after her Hawera showing, even making allowances for the soft track. “What do you make of Havering?” I asked a good judge after the Quin Abbey gelding had run badly in the Flying Handicap at Hawera on Wednesday. “Well, he’s got me licked,” was the replv, which just about sums up the position for all of us. After numerous failures which made one begin to waver a bit regarding Goshawk’s future, the Magpie gelding won at Hawera. He could not have struck a better opportunity, but it indicates that he is still capable of producing a winning gallop. The Auckland Cup may see him prominent, but many of his admirers would prefer to see him run in the Christmas Handicap. Knightlike is racing much better now .than he has done since his two-year-old days. He represents a case of the success of the gelding operation. Knightlike should get some more money at Auckland. Dolomite was an unlucky runner both days at Hawera.

Paganelli was beaten at the end of six furlongs at Hawera and docs not appear in form as good as earlier in the season. Concentrate meets Star Stranger 41b. better in the Auckland Cup than he did when he finished second in the Egmont Cup with Star Stranger unplaced. Concentrate Is an Improved gelding to what he was at Riccarton. but his advantage of 41b. is not likely to enable him to keep in front of the Martian gelding at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Spearmiss ran n good race in the Egmont Cup and she is likely to win one during the holidays. Crack American Rider for England. According to the latest files to hand from London, the crack American jockey Earle Sande. has accepted a retainer to ride for one of the most powerful racing stables in Great Britain. Sande has had j •i most remarkable career as a jockey, and it is little wonder that he lias long been regarded by good judges as one of the best horsemen in the world. In 1928 Sande an nounced that he bad definitely decided t< retire from race riding. At that time bi'average for 10 years riding was amazing Ho had ridden a winner out of every four mounts, and it is computed that he had won 021 races. But Sande did not stay out of the saddle for long, and when ho resumed riding he was just as successful as ever. For Australia. Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., have sold for export to Western Australia a yearling bv Paladin from On Sight. The latter is a mare by Winkie from Ayo Ready. Aye Ready is a sister to Ayah, the dam of Inferno and Jemidar. The latter horse, a son of Martian, won the Perth Cup. of 2000 sovs.. the distance being two miles, so that this family has already n high-class representative in the West. The yearling, which was bred by Mr Gordon E. Murray, of Little River

Son of Hurry On Coming.

will be gelded and turned out for a further six months before being shipped to Australia.

Mr. G. Kain, owner of the Gladstone Park Stud, Orari, has effected the purchase, through Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., of the four-year-old colt. Lord Warden, a chestnut son of Hurry On. from Il.vthe, by Chaucer (son of St. Simon), from Miss Gunning 11, by Carbine from Memoir, by St. Simon from Quiver, sister to the dam of Polymelus and Grafton. Lord Warden was very highly recommended by the British Bloodstock Agency, who have sent to New Zealand Absurd. Limond. and Paladin, as well as many highly successful brood mares to Messrs. G. M. Currie, the late J. F. Buchanan. W. G. Stead, and others. He is described ns of a high-class type, and possessing more quality than is usually secured in the sons of Hurry On. Lord Warden has been purchased to take the place of Solferino at the head of Mr. Kain’s stud, and with his remarkable breeding to recommend him he should enter upon a highly successful career in his new home. He is being shipped to New Zealand at once, so that he will be given a long spell before entering upon stud duties. Mountain Heath In Trouble.

Mountain Heath was in rather a bad way for some time after the Woodville

meeting. He was kicked just prior to being taken to the meeting, but it was not thought very serious at the time. However. be was galloped on during the race for the Bolton Handicap. On the second day he received another severe kick on the stifle and was very sore afterwards; in fact, there was some doubt as to whether the bone had been injured or not. He is recovering, hut it may be deemed necessary to spell him. This would be very unfortunate for his two sporting owners and his trainer, with the holiday meetings coming on, as he was in good form.

When Star God won the Warwick December Handicap at Warwick Farm on December 7 his time, 2.30. was only half a second outside the Australian and New Zealand record for a mile and a half, held by Gothic and Kidaides. >

Glare and Quantum will race first at the Dunedin meeting, where Glare will be ridden on the first day in the Otokia Handicap by C. Emerson. No rider has as yet been engaged for Quantum. The horses will then go on for the Wyndham and Southland meetings. *

Recently a Trentham trainer asked for a price to be put on Psychology and Gesture. The answer was 2500 guineas for the former and 2000 guineas for Gesture. So far no business has'resulted.

A. Eastwood passed through to Auckland an Thursday, and will be on hand to ride Paquito Jn his final gallops at Ellerslie. In addition to piloting Great Star in the Railway Handicap he will do the lightweight riding for J. T. Jamieson’s stable. A Good Record. F. Loontb received a handsome case of cutlery as part of the prize, for Prodiee’s win In the Te Awamutu Cup. Ho has a great record in connection with this race, having won it five times—the last four years in succession. He first won the race with Mr. H. de Latour's Cynic in 1917, and in 1926 scored with Dr. E. H. B. Mil-

son’s Pliaola. The next two years he won with Mr. D. R. Walker's Desert Glow, and) on Saturday annexed the event with Pro-. dice, who is owned by himself. More Valuable Blood.

Mr. John Donald, tlie Westmere studmaster, has just purchased in England through Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., the five-year-old brood mare Modiste, in foal to Son and Heir, a young sirs by that great staying horse, Son-in-Law, and who headed the English sires’ list in 1924. Modiste is described as a beautiful quality mare and as she is safe in foal should be a valuable asset to Mr. Donald's stud, which already shelters thirteen English mares. Modiste, which was bred by. Lord Carnarvon, is sired by Franklin, a young sire from the Sunshine family, who ran second in the St. Leger, beating Craig an Eran, after giving 71b. to Golden Myth and winning the Hardwick Stakes at Ascot. Franklin won £10.400 in stakes and his, successes included the Coronation Cup. 1* miles, and Champion Stakes, 10 furlongs, in which he carried 9.0. He is a son of Volta, out of Cambrie, by Sainfoin. There is a doubling up of the Sunshina blood in this pedigree, and Martagon. tha sire of Martian, appears in the pedigree of Franklin and also of the dam of Modiste. The extended pedigree of the latter shows that Modiste is out of Vogue, a daughter of Tracery from Charmhouse, by St. Frusquin—Fairy Martin, by Martagon —Queen of the Spring, by SpringfieldQueen of the Hills, by Exminister—Queen of. the May. by King of Trumps. Son and Heir, to which Modiste is safe in foal, ran third in the St. Leger and is out of Cinderella, winner, of the Acorn Stakes. She is by The Tetrareh (sire of Chief Ruler) out of Dolabella, a half-sister to Sansovino, winner of the Derby.

“Classiquc”: Limerick is a six-year-old. Laughing Prince is a five-year-old. Limerick was a four-year-old when he defeated Laughing Prince in the Champion Plate.
