Oxford Street, London, is one of the most popular beggars’ pitches owing to the number of women shoppers. As many as fifty bootlace sellers, hymn-singers, etc., have been counted at one time outside a big shop. Uniforms and hats for the use of Salvationists are provided by the army’s own supply department. Last year they dealt with 8000 uniforms for women, and the same number for men, and 14,000 bonnets and hats.
