ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTERING

EX-CONSTABLE CHARGED

POLICEMAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED RECEIVING

Something of a sensation was caused in the city yesterday when it became known that Detectives Jarrold and McLennan had arrested a police constable and an ex-constable in connection with charges of breaking and entering. The constable was Hugh Robertson Stevenson, aged 27, of the Taranaki Street station and he was charged before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning with receiving from Joseph Maurice White and Wilfred Leonard Ramm clothing to the value of £l2/11/6 knowing the same to have been dishonourably obtained. Ramm, who, up to a week or so ago, was also a member of the police force, attached to the Taranaki Street station, was charged with breaking and entering by night the shop of C. Smith, Ltd., and. stealing three suits of pyjamas, a Stetson hat, two caps, a dressing gown, two singlets, a pair of trousers, a pyjama coat, seven shirts, two pairs of gloves, four collars, a scarf, and nine ties, to the total value of £25. Chief Detective Lopdell, in asking for a week’s remand, said that so far as Stevenson was concerned there was only the one charge against him. “Up to last night,” said the Chief Detective, “he was a respected member of the police force. I ask for heavy bail as the offence under the circumstances 13 naturally a very serious one.” . Concerning Ramm, Chief Detective Lopdell said he was a married man.
