DROUGHT ON PACIFIC COAST

SHORTAGE OF WATER IN CALIFORNIA DRIEST AUTUMN IN STATES’ HISTORY (Rec. November 28, 9.30 p.m.) San Francisco, November 28. California is literally praying for rain, following Archbishop Hanna’s edict that all Roman Catholics must include this supplication in their daily devotions. The entire Pacific coast from Mexico to Alaska is suffering from shortage of water. In San Francisco there has been no rainfall whatever since July 1. This autumn has been the driest in California’s history, which goes back to 1849. Electric power is so short in Seattle and Vancouver that street lighting may be discontinued. There has been scarcely any rain during November in Vancouver and Victoria, where normally the rainy season at its height gives a precipitation of ten to twelve inches. Forest fires are raging in Southern Oregon and Northern California, many settlers having narrow escapes.
