CLOSED BY SLIPS AND WASHOUTS Blocked by a big washout at the thirteen mile peg. and by nine slips which have fallen between the thirteen mile and seventeen mile pegs, the Akatarawa Gorge road is now impassable. The recent heavy rain also brought down several slips on the Waikanae side of the saddle. Onl.i limited infon ••■tior is avail able at the district office of the Public Works Department at present, but the road has been closed tor traffic. Though the Hutt County Council is assisting in the removal o.' the ob structions on its side of the saddle, and extra men have been taken on by the Public Works Department to get the job finished as soon as possible, it will lie at least a week, and perhaps a fort night, before the road is agai.. open. A roadman employed in this section had a miraculous escape D n death as he was caught in the main land slide, and was carried for some dis tance down the face, luckily escaping with severe bruises to the shoulders.
