LINERS The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Adelaide arrived at Melbourne recenfly from London on her first voyage since extensive alterations wore made to her turbine engines, and averaged 131 knots during the passage. This is an increase of 11 knots on her former speed. The alterations, wbicn are also being carried out in the sister turbine steamers Port Bowen and Port Caroline, consist of a rearrangement of the blades on the turbines to give greater efficiency. Other improvements have been made in the vessel’s refrigerated machinery and holds, including the installation of more efficient aircirculating appliances. The C. and D. Line received a wireless message yesterday from the Port Campbell, en route from London, stating that the vessel will arrive at Auckland early on Sunday morning. This means a fast run of 36 days. The ship was recently fitted with a Bauer-Wach low pressure turbine which was calculated to add at least another knot speed of the vessel. The Port Campbell is expected at Wellington about the end of next week. A TRAINING SHIP OLD SAILER’S NEW ROLE The Alaska Packers Association have sold the barque Star of England to Swedish buyers to be used as a training vessel. The Star of England, which is well known at Sydney, was originally the British ship Blairmore. Then she was sold to American buyers and renamed the Abbey Palmer, and placed in the lumber trade between the Pacific Coast and Australia. After being engaged in the lumber trade for some years she was purchased by the Alaska Packers for tlie salmon trade, and did her last voyage from Alaska to San Francisco last year. Tlie Star of England is a steel vessel of 1806 tons net register, and was built at Dumbarton by A. McMillan and Co. SUGAR FOR AUCKLAND. The British steamers Saltersgate, 3940 tons, and Antonio. 5225 tons, have been chartered to load a cargo of raw sugar at a Peruvian port for Auckland. The British steamer Antinous, 4563 tons, has been chartered to load sugar at Cuba for Auckland; thence to Ocean Island to load phosphates for Australia. IRON BARON SOLD. The single-deck Australian Inter-State steamer Iron Baron, a unit of the Broken Hili Pt,v. Ltd.’s fleet, which has been laid up in Newcastle, New South Wales owing to the slump in the inter-State trade, has been sold to Norwegian owners. The Iron Baron, formerly Kilbaha. was launched in Glasgow in 1911, and registered in Melbourne ns the steamer Iron Baron in 1926. She is of 3139 tons gross register, and carries about 5500 tous dead weight on a draft of 20 feet 7 inches.

WOOL SHIPS SCALES LINE CHARTERS The George H. Scales Co. Ltd. have chartered the motor-ship Anglo-Canadian to load wool in New Zealand for the United Kingdom and the Continent during January and February, and tlie steamer Benvenue to take the loading berth at Dominion ports during March, also for the United Kingdom and Continent. Both vessels will proceed via the Panama route. The motor-ship Anglo-Canadian is owned by the Nitrate Producers S.S. Co. Ltd., London, and was built last year by Short Bros. Ltd., Sunderland. Her principal dimensions are as f0110w:—5268 tons gross, 3240 tons net; length, 426 feet; beam, 58 feet; depth, 24.7 feet. Her engines are of a normal horse-power of 578. The Benvenue is a sister ship to the Ben liner Bencruachan, which is also under charter to tlie Scales Company. The Benvenue was built in 1927 by C. Connell and Co., Glasgow. Her principal dimensions are: 5290 tons gross, 3750 tons net; length, 429 feet; beam, 53.9 feet; depth, 30 feet. Iler engines are of 675 normal horse-power. The Scales Company report that the steamer Bencruachan, previously announced to load in New Zealand, is due in the Dominion on December 20. She is fixed to load at Wellington, Tolago Bay, Napier, Timaru, and Port Chalmers in a rotation not yet decided upon. The vessel will sail finally on January 10 for the United Kingdom and Continent, via Panama. THE PORT HUNTER. The C. and D. Line advise that the Port Hunter will now sail from Wellington at 11 o clock this morning for London, via Panama. MIN AT AUCKLAND. ~The A. und A. Line chartered steamer Min arrived at Auckland at 1.30 p.m. yesterday from New York. The vessel is to leave Auckland on Monday for Wellington, where she is due next Wednesday. “ALL WELL” ON CORINTHIC. A wireless message received vesterday by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. from their liner Corinthic, which left Wellington last Friday for Southampton and London, stated, “Fine weather since departure. All well on board.” UNCHARTED ROCK. The Marine Department has been notified that an uncharted rock has been located with only 10 feet of water over it near the entrance to Port Hardy. Its position is approximately 40deg. 43Jmin. south and 173 deg. 54imin. east, almost in a direct line from Nile Head on d’Urville Island and Cape Stephens, on Stephens Island. The rock is out of the usual run of vessels, but would be a danger to vessels seeking shelter. When the Tutanekal returns from her visit to the northern lighthouses in a few weeks she will examine the locality and verify the position of the rock, MAKURA LEAVES SYDNEY. Cabled news has been received by the Union Company that the Makura left Sydney yesterday afternoon for Wellington. She is due here on Monday morning and will leave again on Tuesday afternoon for San Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. PASSENGERS FOR NEW ZEALAND. The ship’s cargo is for the Texas Oil Company and the Geo. H. Scales Co. are agents for the vessel. From Wellington the Callandria will go to Auckland to complete discharge.

THE lONIC DELAYED. News was received by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company yesterday that their liner lonic was delayed at Bluff by rain. She will now leave there at noon tomorrow for Wellington, and is due here on Monday morning to proceed with her loading. ARMADALE LEAVES NEW YORK. Mr. W. Wallis has been notified by cable that the A. and A. Line chartered steamer Armadale sailed from New York last Friday and Newport News on Sunday with general cargo to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland about December 31, and at Wellington a week later. RADIO FROM MAIMOA,. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company received a wireless message yesterday from the Maimoa en route from Brisbane, stating that she will arrive at Bluff on Monday afternoon to commence loading for London. THE KAPONGA. The Union Company advise that the Kaponga, from Adelaide and Edithberg, is expected to clear Melbourne to-morrow for Auckland, Portland, New Plymouth, Tarakohe and Lyttelton. WATERSIDE DELEGATES. News was received yesterday that the North Island delegates to the Waterside Federation Conference at Greymouth will arrive at Wellington by the Wahine this morning. MISCELLANEOUS. The Kanna is due at Greymouth to-day to load for Miramar, Wellington and New Plymouth. The Kaimai was to have left Greymouth yesterday for New Plymouth and Wellington.
