HUTT BY-ELECTION

REFORM CAMPAIGN ■ ACTIVE Mr. H. F. Johnston, the Reform candidate for the Hutt seat, addressed a meeting of young people at Petoue last night. Mr. V. E. Jacohson, who presided, emphasised the important part the rising generation eould play in polities and of the value they cojild be to the country in working for a clean and efficient Government. Mr. Johnston claimed that the only policy .which any man could adhere to was that of the Reform Party. It was a broad policy and one which provided for the benefit of the whole community. Paying a tribute to the leader of the party, Mr. Johnston said it was clear that" the Right Hon. J. G. Coates was the only man in New Zealand to-day sufficiently equipped to successfully carry out the administration of the Dominion’s affairs. The candidate will deliver his opening address at the King George Theatre. Lower Hutt, at 8 to-night, and preparations have been made for a capacity attendance. The Mayor of Lower Hutt (.Sir Alexander Roberts) will preside, and Mr. Johnston will outline in detail the planks of his policy. At noon to-morrow Mr. Johnston will address employees of the Gear Meat Company at the company’s works at Petone, and’ in the evening he will address the electors of Petone in the Grand Theatre. A full attendance of the public is anticipated for the latter •meeting, which will be presided over by the De-puty-Mayor of Petone, Councillor V. E. Jacobsen. On Friday at 8 p.m. the candidate will speak in the pavilion at Day’s Bay, while at the same time an open-air meeting will be addressed outside the Petone committee rooms by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P. for Wellington Suburbs. MR. NASH AT EASTBOURNE Despite the very boisterous weather, the Eastbourne Borough Council chamber was well filled with friends and supporters of Mr. W. Nash, Labour candidate, last night. Mr. Battersby presided. Mr. Nash, in his address, dealt with various portions of his election policy. A resolution pledging support to Mr. Nash’s candidature was carried “Unanimously, and a large number of those present expressed their willingness to join Mr. Nash's election committee. •To-morrow night Mr. Nash will open his campaign, when he will deliver an address at the Labour Hall, Petone. The Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. McKenzie) will occupy the chair. Mr. Nash will explain his election policy and will elucidate important planks vf the Labour Party’s platform. He will also reply to the statement of the Right Hon. J. G. Coates regarding the wages of Public servants. Unemployment, conditions on the relief works under both Reform and United Governments, and unemployment insurance will also be dealt with. Mr Nash will,speak at the Railway Workshops at noon on Friday. Openair meetings in support of Mr. Nash will be held in Petone, Lower Hutt and Moera on Friday evening.
