COMMERCE EXAMINATIONS

WORK AT THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE. Reporting to the Technical College Board of Governors on Monday, the Commercial Advisory Committee stated that it had inspected the examination papers and a full range of examples of class work and visited classes in typewriting and shorthand. It considered that the work shown was very creditable alike to teachers and students, and desired to congratulate the director and staff on the high standard maintained. It welcomed the action of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in holding examinations in commercial subjects with a view to granting competency certificates, and trusted that the scope of the exainintions." would be extended so that the need of the commercial community for evidence of efficiency might be met, as present examinations do not meet the requirements in the ease of office juniors. Beyond Expectations. The Furniture Trade Advisory Committee reported that it had examined the work done in the classes during the session and were very satisfied with it. The classes had been successful. beyond expectation and had thoroughly justified their starting. The committee congratulated Mr. Cross on the . results obtained, and urged the Department to reconsider his grading since as practical men and committee was of the opinion that he was not even receiving the remuneration which his capabilities would secure for him in the trade itself. The return of attendances showed the evident interest taken by the students in their work. A donation of £3/3/- would be made by the furniture trades employers and £l/1/- from Messrs. Marshall and Co. towards prizes, and the Furniture Trades Union of Workers would consider the matter of a donation at their next meeting. The committee expressed appreciation of the helpful advice and counsel given by the director, Mr. J. H. Howell during the past year. The report, was considered very satisfactory.
