THE STATE AND SUNDAY TRADING

Sir,—rlt is rather amusing to say the least to see shopkeepers, etc., being fined for Sunday trading, in view of the example the Government sets with their Sunday trading. If a man is lined for selling bread on Sundays, what about the Government selling their goods, etc., on that day? A few trains may be necessary on Sunday, but, of course, it can be overdone. This is a problem some of your readers may be able to solve. I confess I am unable to. I think in all tilings the Government of a country should set the example, remembering the Scriptural injunction, “Righteousness exalteth a nation.” I speak as one who has charge of a large number of men in a Government Department, and I find it much harder to control them since the end of the last session. They say when spoken to about any misdemeanour, “Oh, the 'heads’ can help themselves to £lOO, why cannot we have something?” I think this is an aspect of that matter which has not been touched on before. Let the Government set a good example, and right-minded people will follow. —I am, etc., “OBSERVER.” Wellington, November 25.
