HUTT BY-ELECTION

CAMPAIGN FOR REFORM MEETING AT EASTBOURNE There were over 60 people present at the meeting of friends and supporters addressed at Dellabarca’s Hall, Eastbourne, last night by Mr. H. F. Johnston, Reform candidate for the Hutt seat. Mr. C. H. Andrews presided,. and the proceedings were of an enthusiastic nature. The chairman expressed satisfaction with the large attendance, pointing out that it indicated the extent of the interest in the contest and the support likely to be forthcoming for Mr. Johnson. He was of opinion that the district as a whole would provide a solid Reform vote. Mr. Johnston thanked those present for their offers of co-operation and briefly outlined the points he would discuss in his opening sjieech. He announced to the meeting that in addition to the committees already formed at Hjjtt, Petone, and Day’s Bay, a strong organisation under Mr. McEldowney had been set up at Lowry .Bay. The candidate received an attentive hearing, and at the conclusion of the meeting those present formed themselves into a committee to work wholeheartedly for Mr. Johnston’s return. To-night, at 8 o’clock, Mr. Johnston will address a gathering of young people at the Petone committee rooms, at the corner of Jackson and Nelson Streets. This meeting will be of particular interest in view of the prominent part members of the younger generation are reported to be taking in Mr. Johnston’s campaign. The candidate will deliver his opening address at the King George Theatre, Lower Hutt, at 8 p.m. to-morrow, and preparations have been made for a capacity attendance. The Mayor of Lower Hutt (Sir Alexander Roberts) will preside, and Mr. Johnston will outline in detail the planks of his policy. . At noon on Thursday, Mr. Johnston will address employees of the Gear Meat Company, at the company’s works at Petone, and in the evening he will address the electors of Petone in the Grand Theatre. A full attendance of the public is anticipated for the latter meeting. On Friday, at 8 p.m., the candidate will speak in the pavilion at Day’s Bay, while at the same time an open-air meeting will be addressed outside the Petone committee rooms by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P. for Wellington Suburbs. THE LABOUR CANDIDATE. A meeting of friends and supporters of Mr. W. Nash, the Labour candidate, was held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lower Hutt, last night. There was a large attendance, over winch Mr. P. Downes presided. A short mllress was deliverer by Mr. Nash, and Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., also spoke. A resolution pledging support to Mr. Nash's candidature was carried unanimously. The details of the organiser’s work in connection with the campaign were discussed. . Mr. Nash will address friends and supporters at Eastbourne to-night. The meeting will take place at the Council Chambers. . On Thursday night Mr. Nash will open his campaign, when he will deliver an address at the Labour Hall, Petone. The Mayor of Petone (Mr. D. McKenzie) will occupy the chair.

MR. KERR’S MEETINGS. Mr. James Kerr, United Party candidate for the Hutt seat, will address the electors al the Eastbourne Theatre on Thursday evening, at S o’clock. The chair will be taken by the Mayor of Eastbourne. Mr. M. H. Jones.
