RIFLE-SHOOTING

KARORI CLUB At Trentliam on Saturday the members of the Karorl Rifle Club tired the second match of the long range series for the club championship at ranges 800 yards and DUO Jl a'he're was a decided improvement in the weather conditions for this match, the wind direction being constant, although at times it varied sufficiently in intensity to make several degrees change in deflection necessary to keep near the bull. At 800 yards the shooting was of a particularly high order, the most noteworthy performance being that put up by J. Grove. Starting with an inner, he went on to put his remaining nine shots into the bull, thus scoring a 49 that would require a possible to beat it. Next in order of merit was 11. V. Croxton, who dropped three points in his first five shots, but finished strongly with five bulls for 47. 1,. Old started off with five bulls, then an inner, followed by a “bird,” and three bulls to finish, made his total 47. 4G's were scored by no fewer than six competitors at this range. ■ At 900 yards the conditions were a trifle more difficult, and intensity changes more frenuent.' A. V. Swanson headed the list at this range with 45, dropping only three points with his lust eight shots. There were four scores of 44, and three of 43. Pride of place for the day’s shooting went to J. Grove, who followed up ins 49 at 800 cards with 44 at 900 yards, and his total o? 93 points is four points better tlian the club standard. SUBURBS CLUB The Suburbs Club fired over flic long ranges, SOO and 900 yards, at Trentlmm on Saturday, for tlie championship, . No. 2 series, and the Newton Cup. A steady fresh breeze was blowing from the right, and the conditions were for good scoring. At 800 yards Stewart, 47, and Cuming, 40. made the outstanding scores, and at 900 yards Peat’s 47 was exceptionally good. At the combined ranges Drake and Cuming burst the club’s standard of 91, a rare event, and with their handicaps were placed first and second, respectively. Peat made the remarkably fine gun score of 89, and was top off the rifle. Great praise was given to flic unexpectedly line shooting of Drake and Cuming in outshooting the scratch men. and in individually getting'such good range totals.
