SPEEDWAY RACES

MOTOR-CYCLE THRILLS KILMINSTER TRIUMPHANT AGAIN About 13,000 spectators were attracted to the Kilbirnie Speedway Stadium on Saturday night by the motor-cycle racing •on the dirt track. There was scarcely a breath of wind, although the air was a little chilly. Tile track was in better order than it had yet been, and some fast times were put up. The racing was keen, and the crowd were treated to some thrilling riding. W. Kilminster, the Wellington rider, was again the hero of the evening, winning the Big Nine International Gold Sash scratch mile race, carrying a first prize of £2O, and the gold sash. He also captured the final of tlie First Division Handicap (£2O first prize). Kilminster was accorded tumultuous applause after each appearance, and when T. Coltman presented him with the gold sash. Two new riders, S. Perkins and A. Mann, both noted Australians, made their first appearances. Although handicapped through lack of experience on the Kil-; birnie track, each gave a magnificent display of speed, but Mann’s machine broke down in each event. Perkins’s' motor stopped in his first heat, but he won his heat of the Gold Sash, and was second in the filial. ‘ The other Australians, J. Datson and B. Stiepewich, had bad luck again. Datson’s motor stopped in both events in which he started. Stiepewich ran second iu his heat of the First Divsion Handicap, and third in the semi-final, failing to qualify for the final. He fell in his heat in the Gold Sjish race. H. Mangham, a New Zealander who has returned from Australia with. m'any successes to his credit, rode brilliantly, winning his heat and semi-final of the First Division Handicap, but fell heavily in the first lap of the final. His chain snapped in his heat of the Gold Sash. The scoring board and loudspeaker system were operated most efficiently, and the management throughout was excellent. Although there were a number of severe falls, no rider suffered serious injury. The fastest time put up during the evening was when Kilminster won the Gold Sash in Imin. 31 l-ssec., which is only 1 l-ssec. outside the track record for the mile.
