THE RACING WORLD

THE LEVIN MEETING

TALISKER AND VERONESE WIN

(By

“The Watcher.”)

The popularity of the Levin Racing Club’s annual meeting was again shown by the large attendance of Wellington and district racing folk on Saturday. Fine weather also contributed largely to the increased gates and with the totalisator turnover showing a good increase the club officials have reason to congratulate themselves upon the progress being made.

The class of horse competing was not at all strong, but Mr. Coyle produced some wonderfully close finishes, the excitement of which made the racing exceptionally interesting. Talisker repeated his twelve months’ old victory in the Levin Cup, and Veronese scored in the open sprint. After the race for the Cup the trophy, consisting of a silver tea and coffee set complete with tray, donated by Mr. Fred Davies, of Levin, was presented in the birdcage, being received by Colonel Hamilton, son-in-law of’ the owner of the winner. The totalisator business was brisk all day and the existing facilities are rapidly becoming inadequate for the attendances at Levin. Money was shut out on every event, but despite this the sum of £.18,341 was handled, an increase of £2075 on the £16.266 that was handled twelve months ago. ' The only untoward incident of the day apart from the reversal of the third plac- ■ ing in the Levin Cup, was the accident in the concluding event, which is reported under the description of the race. MAIDEN HACK. Ben Hur, warm favourite in Ihe Maiden, had every chance, but after a creditable showing went under to an improving hack in Glen Rossie. Dancing Star, Streamer, and Ben Hut began best from Evening Hero, Grecian, and Glen Rossie Dancing - Star and Ben Hur led into the straight from Glen Rossie. The latter challenged in the straight, and after a brief struggle with Ben Hur beat him by half a length. Pari finished over the beaten lot for third money four lengths away, with Grecian fourth, then Dancing Star, General Gas, and Evening Hero. The winner, who is by Acre from Sleeping Beauty, should turn out a useful sort. Mr. Elgar’s three-year-old Grecian shaped very promisingly. Pari was unlucky, failing to jump out well and losing a lot of ground. MANAKAU HURDLES. Only five started in the hurdles. Hard Gold being a solid favourite. Rash set a fast, pace, and being joined at the six furlongs by Hard Gold, they carried on to , the last fence, where Rash broke down. Hard Gold then went on and won by six 1 lengths. Rash struggling home a couple I of lengths in front of Call Again, with 'General Vai fourth, and Schorr last. Hard Gold would have won without the mishap to Hash. Schorr jumped very badly. VERAROA HANDICAP. Rank outsiders prevailed in the hack seven, when Goldlike and Dainty Ways fought out the finish clear of the field. Goldlike on otaki form paid an entirely false price. Make Up and Footpad, second nnd first favourites respectively, began best, ami when settled down Footpad, Derrnod. and Le Champ led from Make Up, Elyslanor. and Pompadour. Pompadour. Dainty Ways. Goldlike. and Warzone made fast runs on the turn, and led into the straight, closely bunched, from Footpad and Make Up. Dainty Ways was in front at the last furlong, but Goldlike wore her down nnd won bv a short neck. Plane finished third, about two lengths away, and then in line came Pompadour. .Make Up. Elyslanor. and Dcrniod. Footpad had every chance, but .Make Up got carried out in the run home, and was unlucky. At the same time the winner won fairly comfortably. MAKO MAKO HANDICAP. Clarendon, Ex Done, and Marica were evenly backed at the head of the pool in the hack sprint and bar the failure of Clarendon the picking was good. Marica was always in front and attended by I’atearoa and Rational II led to the straight from Ex Dono. In the stretch Marica drew out and Ex Dono failed to get her. being beaten by half a length. Patoaroa was two lengths nnd a half away ; third, with Clarendon fourth, and then I national II and Werata, Clarendon got off badly and looked unlucky. Ex Dono had every chance, but needed the race, which was his first since the Hawke's Bay Guineas. Marica is in good form at present. LEVIN CUP. The Cup provided a great finish, Talisker getting up to beat Mountain Heath in the last stride, bearing out the motto of “horses for courses,” as he won the event twelve months ago. and had not been at all successful since. The Hawk led early, but pulled In behind Rameses, and Royal Game made the running from Duellona nnd Talisker. with The Hawk next. There was no change till rounding the home turn, where they closed up, Mountain Heath coming through on the rails. Mountain Heath was lending right tip to the line, but Talisker eaught him to win in the last stride by a nose with Rantescs a short neck away third, with Duollonii right up fourth. Then came Imperial Spark and Discourse. Talisker won well. Duellona met with Interference in the straight or she would have been closer. Mountain Heath ran a good race, and with luck would have won Kerneses improved a great deal on his second Otaki run. The Hawk was gettlna '.'s but a r oo<l I’ nssl 'KO throughout. After the race the judicial stewards held nu Inquiry and reversed the plncings of Rameses and Duellona on account of the interference, no Manic attaching to ' T Green, rider of Rameses. LAKE HANDICAP. Public opinion was again correct in the hack d.stance event, when Kiriana ami Mnsbcr finish's! in that order. Airforce and Fallow led early from Kiriana and Dlsrank. Masher and Fine Acre were whipping in. Fine Acre made a fast run up the back, and followed Fallow into the s.might, from Kirilina. Masher, and Dlsrank. Masher was in front until the last few strides, when Kiriana drew up ami heat him by half a head, with Fallow a neck away third. Dlsrank was fourth, followed by Fine Acre and Robbie's Mistake Masher should have won. Fine Acre was not handled with the best of judgment. nor was Dlsrank. who ran his best race for some time. McDonald memorial. For the open sprint Veronese, Banket ami Hunting Boy were all solidly backed, Banket made* all the running, from Veronese and Quantum. She led into the.

straight, clear of Veronese, but stopped over the last bit. and Veronese beat her a short neck. Quantum was two lengths back, third, with Hunting Boy fourth, and Wanderlust next. Hunting Boy did not go well, and-tailed to jump out as brilliantly as usual. This was not his right form. Veronese is in good form at present. HOKIO HANDICAP. Backers went very hot for Acora in the concluding event. She was always well placed, with Just So and Tea Taster In the running, but Just So wore her down in the run home and won by a neck. Tea Taster was four ■lengths back third, and Acreline was fourth, followed by Tapestry and Rasouli. After going two furlougs Le Champ (N. Voitre) got on to the heels of one of the leaders and fell, bringing down Golden Shadow (T. Green), who in turn brought down Pompadour (W. Broughton). It was reported that Green broke a collarbone, while the injuries of the other two lads appeared to be serious. The Budget twice dislodged his rider before the start, and Injuring hlpi so that he was unable to ride, took no part in the The winner, who Is a half-sister •by Chief Ruler to Mireusonta and Kiosk, I showed great promise as a two-year-old. I and was unable to race last season. She had a race at Wavcrley last month, ami the support accorded her on Saturday indicated correctly that she has struck form again. She was too gond for Acorn, who is herself a pretty smart hack. They outclassed the .others.
