AUSTRALIA’S POLICY
TARIFF TO ENCOURAGE INDUSTRIES. COMMENT ON PROPOSAL OF LORD BEAVERBROOK Canberra, November 22. The Minister of Customs, Mr. Fenton, commenting on Lord Beaverbrook’s proposal for Free Trade within the British Empire, declared that Lord Beaverbrook should make an attempt to put Britain’s house in order before setting out to remedy the position in the Dominions. “Our policy,” he said, “is undoubtedly Australia first, Britain next, and then the sister Dominions. We intend to revise our tariff in order to encourage the development of our own industries. Britain, by contrast, has allowed manufacturers from cheap labour countries of Europe to establish themselves in the United Kingdom, with the result that they are able to produce goods at a lower cost than British manufacturers, and are enjoying the preference. That is certainly not right.”
