THE RACING WORLD

LEVIN ANNUAL MEETING TO 'HV

A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

The annual meeting of the Levin Racing Club will-be held to-day, and promises, with large fields and fine weather, to be very successful. A special train will run from Palmerston North and one from Thorndon for the convenience of patrons. Otaki form should be worth following, though several fresh horses may complicate matters. The programme is as follows, rchandicaps included:—

Bon Hur, Dancing Star, Pari, Rasouli, Streamer, and Tobaccoland appear to have the best prospects In the Maiden race. Pari raced well at Wellington, where Rasouli also showed up.

The Hurdles field are a poor lot collectively. Hard Gold seems sure to run well again, and old Sunart cannot be discarded. Peshwa on his form should run a good race, making allowance for a moderate showing at Otaki. Rash showed promise In his two races at Otaki. On the turning course at Levin he may prove more troublesome.

Make Up’s form is the best in the hack seven., Warzone did not show his right form at Otaki, and Footpad on Carterton running looks likely. Goldlike ran well at Otaki, and, well bandied, may be dangerous.

Clarendon carries weight well, and with the exception of Ex Done, the field is of moderate strength. Marica is in excellent fettle just at present.

In this field it is not much good looking for slow beginners, no matter how solid their finishing run. The Levin course demands smart, horses well placed throughout. The Hawk having come back, his class will carry him a long way, despite his age. Talisker won last year, but he is an unreliable customer. Mountain Heath and Dnellona both begin well, and under their light weights should be troublesome. They, with The Hawk, make most appeal.

With Imateagirl not running, Masher, Gold Bag, Fino Acre,- Klriana and Banbridge represent form. Limosa might improve. . Masher and Gold Bag read best.

Possibilities In the sprint appear to be reduced on form to Goshawk. Banket, Hunting Boy, and Veronese. Goshawk's opportunity looks ideal. HOKIO HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs.

Those who were at Otaki will want to be with Acora. Tea Taster on recent form should show up.

■ NOTES AND COMMENTS I ■ i (By “The Watcher.’’) Acceptances for all first days’ events to bo hold at the Jubilee meeting of the Feilding Jockcv Club on November 30 and December 2 will close on Monday at 8.30 p.in. Dobbin was galloped on at Otaki on Wednesday and is a very unlikely runner nt Levin. ' Imateagirl will not run at Levin to-day. Habit is another who will not fulfil her engagement. Skyrider is an improbable starter in the | Levin Cup to-day. A Wellington owner is negotiating for an Auckland two-year-old. 'Mark one off for Veronese before long. A question that is still unanswered. How good is Cadland? Merry Mint Ims struck form, but he doesn’t like hard tracks. There was not much jar in the going at Otaki. ■ Royal Opera was unlucky at, Otaki. When a horse is saddled up fit and well the first day, is fancied, backed and beaten; docs badly after the race: saddles up several pounds worse the second day ■wins well in faster time than on the first day. what la the answer?

Here’s another tough one: Who are your friends in the racing game?

Mr. W. Higgins reports that his brood mares, Ron Chic and Deborah, have each foaled fillies, the former to Chief Ruler and the latter to Acre.

'Die Paladin—Sun Dance colt passed in at auction at" Riccarton last week has been purchased by tlie Trentliam trainer J. McLaughlin.

The three-year-old filly Disorder, by The Ace from Scrimmage, could have been sold last week at a substantial figure. Had the deal taken place she would have, gone to Australia.

Auckland pencillers heaved several sighs of relief when they received word of the defeat of Volimond at Te Rapa on Monday (says the “Sun.”) From all accounts there must have been money floating round in support of Volimond sutlicicnt to pay the interest on the National Debt.

Tea Partv’s future has not been decided on. The Invercargill filly lias been shin sore for some time, and in the circumstances did well to notch a win and a second at Riccarton. She is to be sent to the paddock for some months, but whether she will remain with E. J. Ellis, or return to Southland, is not yet certain.

Despile the fact that. Chide and Rabbi put Paladin’s stock right in the limelight, some of his progeny were sold very cheaply in Christchurch last week. A two-year-old chestnut filly by Paladin from Ada Merllng by Martian was bought by Mr. V E Hill, and reads a bargain,, as the dam produced Red Wink and was got by Martian. Two ether Paladin mares were at gift prices.

Although Hoylake ran two solid races at the Cup meeting, the imported horse failed to gain a place in his engagements. He looks none the worse for his recent racing, and all going well he will be racing at Manawatu or Ellerslie next month. If the weights suit, it is-.probable that his connections will allow him to tadkle the Auckland Cup.

Doing Well. , ... B. J. Murtagh lias not been at Lrentham verv long, and his team is still small, but he is already showing results. Represented by three horses at Otaki, he secured two wins and a second. So far the material at liis disposal does not reach good class, but given the opportunity success will be just a matter of time.

zV Hardy Veteran. How well The Hawk wears I It is nine years since he commenced his racing career, and he is still capable of winning, a tn--1 bute not only to his tough constitution, but also to the ability of his owner-train-or, J. M. Cameron. The Martian geldin., lias always been a horse of class. At Otaki on Thursday 1 saw Gray look him oyei as they were going into the birdcage alter he had been beaten on First Money, and 1 wondered what he was thinking. No doubt the veteran horseman was paying a silent tribute to an old wonder, of the turf, and possibly he remembered. a day at Tre - tlinni nine years ago next April, when 1 c Hawk boat him on Abstirdum in the 1 actfic Handicap in a two-year-old race that perhaps saw the best field of youngsters that has ever run in New Zealand. Just consider then, The Hawk, 8.12, beat Absurduin, 8.11, by a head, with Rational 9.7, a length and a half back, tlie time for the six furlongs being 1.10 1-5, and the also stnrtcds included Winning Hit, Anomaly. Kick. Off, and'Pluto. It is a coincidence that The Hawk and Gray should once again figure largely together. It was The Hawk who set the torrid pace in the Islington Plate at Auckland that enabled Gray on Thespian to beat Gloaming in the then record time for a mile for Australia and New Zealand, and which still stands as a New Zealand record. It was on The Hawk that Gray essayed the impossible task of beating Gloaming in that memorable duel for the Ormond Memorial Gold Cup. Few horses have stood the strain like The Hawk, and proved capable of staging a come-back in their eleventh year.

Going to Try Here. (Jockey TI. Bennett, of Melbourne, is going to try bis luck in New Zealand and has applied for his license hero. Bennett brought over Mr. C. Boyle’s gelding Conjurer, and instead of returning immediately decided to have a holiday. He has now made;up his mind to extend his stay and so applied for a license to follow bis calling. Bennett, who can go to. scale at 9.0. ’has been for the last two years with the well-known ex-New Zealander Ron Cameron, and lias had plenty of experience and considerable success over hurdles and steeplechase country In Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania. There should, be plenty of opportunity for him here as jumping horsemen are not plentiful nt present, nor are they outstanding in ability. A Great Finisii. The Rahui Hack Handicap at Otaki was only a minor race and does not rank very high on the New Zealand Racing Calendar, but few who witnessed it on Thursday realised that this unimportant event staged one of the best riding exhibitions . 11-ever seen in New Zealand. Make Up (11. Goldfinch) and Kiriana (IL Gray), who were the favourites, led practically abreast all the way. each rider saving his mount for tlie final battle. They entered tlie straight together and then they had a great go. VJetory finally rested with the better. Chide's Programme. The present iutentions of G. MurrayAynsley are to take a team to the Auckland summer meeting. Chide will be a member, provided all goes well with him in the meantime, but a decision as to other horses from the stable likely to accompany him, will not be made until later. A statement has been circulated that Chide was likely to go to Australia next autumn, but hfs owner-trainer stated that he had no intention of making such a trip. Pnqtiifo in Work. Paqulto was at Riccarton on Tuesday and executed some easy work on the plough. The gelding looks improved if anything by his hard racing in Australia, and will not require much work to get him ready to race again. He figures in the nominations for the Auckland Cup. and all depends on the handicapper's opinion as to whether he will be at Ellerslie. If not, his holiday racing may be confined to the Manawatu and Marton meetings. Limerick Out. Limerick was blistered on Sunday and will shortly be sent to his owner's property, Racecourse Hill, for a spell in a specially equipped paddock. He will be brought in again after the New Year, and will enter upon another preparation. If be should stand up to his work, lie will do his autumn racing in New Zealand, as there will not be much opportunity to get him reads’ for another Australian trip. Ho M ears Well. Count Cavour emerged from bis two races at tlie C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting in satisfactory order, and is amongst the easy workers at Riecarton. There is every possibility of him going (o Ellerslie to take liis place In tlie Auckland Cup field for tlie fifth time in succession, ills record in tlie last four years, reading:— 1925. second Io Rapine; 1920, second to Tanadccs: 1927, second to Rapier; 1928, unplaced. Should be again lie on hand for tlie Ellerslie event on Boxing Day. he will have completed tlie unique performance of contesting five New Zealand Cups, and live Auckland Cups, all in succession, as well as four attempts in the Canterbury Cup—a record that has never been,, or is likely to be equalled by any other horse in the Dominion. Huwera Gallops.

On Thursday morning at Huwera (says the ‘‘Star’') Partaga cantered once round and, jumping off at the seven furlong post, ran the half-mile in 52 4-ssec., five furlongs in Imin. Usee., and finishing up his seven in Imin. 33jsec. Grand Marnia ran his half-mile in 52sec. Latakia, accompanied by Joyspear for live furlongs, ran the first three furlongs in ,T)sec., the halfmile in 52sqc., live furlongs in Imin. ssec., and, finishing on alone, ran out the seven furlongs in Imin. 32sec. The .two-year-old Brown Prince was sprinted on the outside of the course proper, running three furlongs in 42see. Valpre and Clover were sprinted four furlongs on the above track, finishing together in 50 l-ssec. The two-year-olds Red Dennis and Salon were given a run on the fast plough, but took 38}sec. to run their three furlongs, with Red Dennis going the better of the pair. Another pair of two-year-olds engaged attention in their gallop over half a mile on the outside of the course proper, which they accomplished in 521 see.. with Awaken halt a length to the good nt the finishing post. Melbourne Cup Field was Poor. In referring to Nightmarch's win at Flemington, “Snowden,” in the “Aus-

tralasian,” said: “Candidly, it was the poorest Melbourne Cup field-1 have ever seen go to the post. The only redeeming feature was that two of the runners, Nightmarch and High Syce, are two great horses, worthy to be ranged with the best that have ever faced the starter for the famous two miles. Phar Lap is a good average Derby winner, but, as I remarked when writing from Sydney at the A.J.C. meeting, no regrets should be expressed that he is a gelding. Much more satisfactory is the fact that Nightmarch is entire. The same remark applies to High Syce. As stated a week or two ago. there is not a horse in Australia that could concede Nightmarch 91b. over any distance. Nightmareh Is a perfect model of what a thoroughbred stallion should be. High Syce is also a magnificent individual, but he is not quite so unexceptional behind the saddle as is Nightmareh. As to the other runners, little need be said. Paquito is a stood class gelding, and is smart from a mile upwards. He, however, lacks the ability to begin quickly enough to be really high class. Carradale is a goodlooking eolt, but, taking a line through Phar Lap, something below first-class. Winalot has been a good winner at weight-for-age and in first-class handicaps, yet. though he won the A.J.C. Spring Stakes this year, his subsequent form indicates lie is not as good as he was.”

TE KUITI MEETING TO-DAY Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 22. The fine weather seems to have come in and prospects are bright for the Te Kuiti meeting to-morrow. In the Maiden Handicap Nassau Lady, Tuku and Mareclial may find favour. The Lamb. Spalpiko and Cybele read likely in the Kipaki Hurdles. Valuation, Guachan and Te Taone may supply the favourite in the Awakino Hack. The Cup is very open and Le Choucas, Lady’s Boy and The Lover are not the only ones that will have good followings. Pompelus and Luminary are two that will run out the mile in the Te Kunii Hack. Lunette, Ti Tree and Macroom will be fancied for the Puketutu Handicap. If reserved for the Otorohanga Hack Te Taone will be favourite with Big Bertha and Valstreet also in demand. The Stewards' Handicap should provide brisk betting with Mervettc. Ridgemount and The Begum at the head of the pool. HORSES SCRATCHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Te Kuiti, November 22.
