SERIOUS CHARGE REDUCED
CHRISTCHURCH HOTEL SENSATION Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, November 18. When Russell George Macarthy appeared in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Adams to-day on a charge of attempting to murder Theresa Mary O’Neill in the Empire Hotel on September 25, and on a second count of having assaulted her, Mr. C. S. Thomas, counsel for accused, said the Crown Prosecutor had agreed to accept a plea of guilty on the charge of assault. The charge of attempted murder was withdrawn, and Macarthy was remanded for sentence till Wednesday' on the second charge. The case arose from a quarrel between Macarthy and a young woman with whom he was living. She was employed in the Empire Hotel, and when she left Macarthy to take up tier residence at the hotel he followed her, taking with him a loaded rifle. A scuffle that took place in the girl’s room in the norel attracted the attention of the licensee, and lie took tlie weapon from Macarthy.
