“PURGE” OF SOVIET OFFICIALS
TEN THOUSAND BEING DISMISSED FINDING JOBS FOR MALCONTENTS (“Times” Cables.) (Rec. November 15, 11.30 p.m.) London, November 15. The “Times’ ” Riga correspondent says the Soviet has begun a “new purge” of untrustworthy officials, ten thousand of whom are being dismissed before May Day, including the majority of the former members of the Intelligentsia and Bourgeoise, whose places are being taken by proletarians. This action is ostensibly to end the widespread corruption in the financial and Taxation Departments, but chiefly because of the necessity of bribing the most active malcontents with official posts and removing them from the ranks of the workers, where a spirit of revolt has developed owing to the recent curtailment of Trade Union authority and the continued scarcity of food.
