SIR GODFREY, THE KNIGHT

In the reign of King Arthur, knighterrantry was very popular. One day Sir Godfrey, Knight of the Round Table, set forth to rescue a maiden, Ermenturde, who was imprisoned by an ogre with two heads and one'eye In the centre of each.

On his way Sir Godfrey was met by an old witch, who begged him for a ride. Sir Godfrey, always valiant, helped her to the back of his horse, aad continued bn Els' way, the old witch crooning softly behind him. They rode on and on. for a, long distance, till the knight espied a wood, beyond which rose the towers of the ogre’s castle, Then the .witch spoke, with a wonderfully changed. voice. If was like the tinkling of myriad , crystal bells. “Sir Knight, I pray thee, please set me down.” Alighting from his horse, Sir Godfrey was amazed to see, not a witch, but a radiant maiden clad In a gown of shimmering white : with a pearl girdle., He.caught her in his arms and set her on the ground. : -’ “Sweet maiden, prithee tell me whom' you are?” “I am a princess, and for' your chivalry, I will aid you. Take my girdle and, when you meet the ogre, he will wish to have it. Do not be afraid! Ask him to let you inside that you may better show it.him. When you are inside throw it. about his neck, and he will be rendered powerless. After that—well, I pray the lady be worthy of you.” Thanking her, amazed at her know-' ledge of his destination. Sir Godfrey rode to the castle, made powerless the ogre, rushed- to the top of the castle and bore his lady away :to love and liberty. ■ —By “Dimsie,” Walpukurau.
