P. AND 0. BRANCH LINE IMPROVED SERVICE Many Improvements have been made in the passenger service of the well-known P. and O. Branch Line of steamers. The preeent route is from Sydney to London, via the Suez Canal, calling at the usual ports en route, and Is maintaned by_ five 13,000 tons steamers of the Baradtne and Bendigo class. These vessels have been converted Into oil-burners, and Improvements in machinery and propellers give them greatly increased speed and enable them to carry out a service which compares very favourably with any other vessels of their class in the trade. During a period of the year when there are some gaps in the ordinary mail service, these ships will carry the English mails from and to Australia. The system of ventilation in the ships has been considerably improved, and electric fans have been Installed in the public rooms. Considerable attention has been given to the menu: there being hot and cold weather menus in which the variety of food lias been considerably extended. Dinner is now served In the evening Instead of at mtd-day as heretofore. Ample accommodation for all passengers Is provided for one sitting. The public roms have been re-fitted with comfortable chairs, carpets and carefully selected enrtnins. The company has also installed kfnematoerraphs, which provide the passengers with up-to-date open-air entertainment during, the voyage. Dance music Is provided on dock by a gramophone with electric amplifiers and in the tropics a dock swimming pool is much favoured by the passengers. The one-class liner is becoming inereasinglv popular, and the ships of the B. and O. Branch Tulnc hare boon brought into line with the latest practice in this department of ocean travel. OVERSEA SHIPS DUE. Shipping at Wellington was quiet yesterday. The only oversea vessels in port were the Kairanga and the Remuera. The former vessel is to sail early this morning for Port Kembla. and the Remuera is to leave at 5 o’clock this evening for Auckland. The intercolnial passenger steamer Manuka is due at Wellington to-morrow from Melbourne direct, and on Monday the arrivals from oversea will be the R.M.S. Tahiti from Sydney, the Golden West from Pacific Coast ports, via Auckland, and the City of Dalhart from New York direct. The Marama is due at Wellington on Tuesday from Sydney. The Keeling is due on Wednesday with New York cargo. The Norfolk, with cargo from Liverpool, is expected at Wellington on Thursday, and on the same day the Canadian Explorer will arrive from Bluff to load for New York, Boston, and Halifax. 'The Rangitiki Is expected next Saturday from Auckland to put out the remainder of her cargo from London. PORT HUNTER DELAYED. The C. and D. Line advise that the Port Hunter has been delayed at Bluff and will not leave there until next Wednesday for Auckland. Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. She is timed to sail from Wellington on November 27 for London, via Panama. RADIO FROM PORT HARDY. A wireless message has been received by the C. and D. Line from the Port Hardy, en route from Liverpool, stating that the vessel will arrive at Auckland at 7 a.m. next Tuesday. The vessel is due at Wellington on November 11. RANGITIKI AT AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Shipping Co.’s motorliner Rangitiki arrived at Auckland at noon yesterday from London anil Southampton. She is to leave Auckland next Thursday for Wellington and is due here on Saturday. TO LEAVE HALIFAX. The Canadian National Steamships’ first steamer to leave Halifax this season for New Zealand will be the Canadian Challenger. The vessel is to sail on December 24 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is expected to arrive at Auckland on February 4. TAHITI LEAVES SYDNEY. Cabled news has been received by the Union Company that the Tahiti left Sydney at 4 p.m. on Thursday for. Wellington. She Is due here on Monday morning and will leave the following afternoon for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete. WAIRUNA AT VANCOUVER. The Union Company has been informed that the Wairuna, from Wellington, arrived at Vancouver at midnight on October 30. The vessel will load at Vancouver, proceeding thence to New Westminster, Union Bay and Ocean Falls. She is expected to clear the last-named port on, November 6 for San Francisco and Los Angeles to complete loading for Lyttelton, Dunedin, New Plymouth and Napier. MAKO TO. WITHDRAW. The Richardson steamer Mako, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, will be temporarily withdrawn from the AucklandEast Coast service. Her place will be taken by the Pukeko. . WAITEMATA AT NAPIER. , With Pacific Coast cargo, the Union Company’s Waitemata arrived at Napier at 5.30 a.m. yesterday from Los Angeles. She will leave on Monday for Lyttelton, Dunedin. Bluff, Nelson, and New Plymouth to complete discharge and then will proceed to Westport for bunkers, proceeding thence about the end of this month to Vancouver via Auckland.
