OCTOBER WEATHER
SUNNY BUT COLD Wellington enjoyed 193 hours of sunshine during the month of October, well above the average of 174 hours. Like September, the month was sunny and eold, the mean temperature (52.6 degrees) being two degrees less than normal. Many pleasant days were experienced, particularly during the period from October 10 to 17, well developed anti-cyclones having been the beneficent influence. The rainfall was below the average for the month. The rains of the last few days have been fairly general throughout the Dominion. Rain fell at the Kelburn Observatory on 13 days, 224 points being recorded, while the gauges at the Karori reservoir showed 250 points to have fallen on fifteen days. The heaviest fall wifhin 24 hours at Kelburn was 100 points, which were recorded on Thursday last. Particularly cold and boisterous ditys were experienced on the 23rd and 24th, when south-east winds ruled. Two frosts on October 16 and 27 were noted. The sunniest day was Tuesday last, when 127 points of bright sunshine smiled upon the city. The mean daily run of wind was 235 miles, though the average was 285 miles. Northerlies predominated, and October 20 was the windiest day, the run being 500 miles, with 482 on the previous day. The barometer averaged a fraction of an inch more than usual.
