Miss M. M. Kelly, a popular officer of the Head Office staff of the Marine Department, who is leaving the Department to be married, was met by the staff in farewell yesterday and presented with a dinner service and set of cutlery. The presentation was made by Mr. G. C. Godfrey, Secretary of the Department, who referred in eulogistic terms to Miss Kelly’s efficiency in carrying out her duties, and expressed the real regret of the staff at losing her services. Mr. Godfrey’s remarks were supported by Messrs. T. A. Cooper, B W. Milller, G. E. Breeze, and Captain A. S. Gibson on behalf of the various branches of the Department. There is nothing dike being perfectly frank in the witness-box. At least one witness in the Supreme Court realised this, for during a lengthy crossexamination yesterday his frankness brought forth loud laughter both from the Bench and all concerned in the case. The conversation was brief but to the point:—Counsel: “You’re an honest man, aren’t you?” Witness: "I’m honest to a degree.”’ Advice has been received by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P. for Wellington Suburbs, from the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore), that Cabinet has approved of a grant for additions to Khandallah School. It is proposed to erect two new rooms to provide a class-room for each teacher on the staff. Mr. Atmore has also approved a grant in order that a proposal made on the occasion of his recent visit to the Karori School to extend the teachers’ room in the Infant building may be given effect to while additions axe being carried out.
