By amendment to the Products Export Act, read a first time in the House of Representatives yesterday, it is proposed to extend the definition of products to' include tobacco. The original trinity on the harmonious working, of 'which the health of civilised society depends, is sacerdotium, imperium, studium —religion, civil order, education. Learning may too easily become the victim of specialists working in their narrow grooves, and justifying, by their pedantic and purblind dogmatism, that witty definition of the specialist as a man who knows more and more about less and less. It is only in the close association and harmonious co-operation of students in all branches of learning that the range and balance of truth are secured. The specific function of the University in the hierarchy of national education might be described as the correction of this baleful tendency towards the megalomania which isolation fosters. For all departments of knowledge are there represented. Teachers and students of all kinds are there brought into habitual association, and thus compelled to appreciate the many-sidedness of truth and the vastness of the range of knowledge. Intelligence is stimulated by discussion: difference is mitigated by intercourse: the native intolerance of Individuals is corrected by the prevailing atmosphere of eclecticism.”—The Bishop of Durham.
