AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE SYSTEM
COMPULSORY TRAINING SUSPENDED VOLUNTEER CORPS MAY BE REINTRODUCED (Rec. November 1, 10.40 p.m.) Canberra, November 1. The Federal Cabinet has decided to take immediate steps for the suspen sion of compulsory military training and the holding of camps. It was suggested that some form of volunteer corps might be instituted to replace the present system. ~ The Prime Minister, commenting on the decision to suspend compulsory military training among the youths of Australia, said the Government bad no intention of interfering with the defence of the Commonwealth. There would be a general review of military policy, with the idea of discovering a more efficient and less costly system. Other members of the Cabinet hinted that the former volunteer system would be reintroduced. Sir George Pearce, Minister ot Defence in the Bruce Government, declared that the Labour Government bpd no authority to suspend compulsoy. training and military camps. Another former Minister described it as an outrage on a most sacred trust.
