WELLINGTON EAST POST OFFICE

DESIGN FOR NEW BUILDING A GRACEFUL FACADE The sketch reproduced on this page is one of the front elevation of the new Wellington East Post Office to •be erected in Cambridge Terrace, just round the corner from Courtenay Place. The new structure will be one of eight stories and a basement, but of these only six stories will extend over the whole area, as the two highest stories are stepped back (from the sides) to approximately have the breadth of the main building. Above the eighth floor (on southern side) is a short square block (elevator) tower, which rises about fifteen feet above the level of the pediment (which in the sketch is surmounted by a flagpole). There are actually three entrances on the Cambridge Terrace elevation. The one on the left-hand side of the picture will admit to the public office, entered through a A marble-dadoed vestibule replete with postal facilities. Here will be provided all facilities for postal, telegraphic, money-order and savings-bank business, with a desk 42ft. in length running at right angles to Cambridge Terrace. The ornamental features of the facade are the two projected ornamental cornices (separated by a story) which rest on four very handsome classic pillars, with elaborate capitals. Between the two central pillars there will be a clock dividing the figures 1930—the year of construction.. In the sketch the new building is called. “Courtenay Place Post Office,” but that is scarcely likely to be perpetuated, as it would be rather misleading (as no part of the new structure Impinges on that thoroughfare). It will in all probability be known as the Wellington East Post Office to con.form with those of Wellington North, South, and Central (Te Aro). The major portion of the building will be occupied by the accountants’ branch, which will be transferred from the G.P.0., in. order to relieve the congestion there. The building, which will be of steel frame and concrete construction, will have a frontage of 60 feet 14 inches to Cambridge Terrace by a depth of 70 feet.
