THE COOLEST POLICEMAN
A traffic policeman of the water, for a long time the butt of jokes dealing with Channel swimming, has at last made an actual appearance in Berlin. He “controls the traffic” on the Wannsee, the famous lake near Berlin, where every fine Sunday sixty to one hundred thousand Berliners of all classes and ages enjoy a day of open-air delight at a total cost of about fourpence. This novelty policeman wears a special rubber suit with an inflated belt, and. his chief duty is directing the many steamers as they cruise on the lake laden with people. He is equipped with paddles, which he uses not only td'propel himself to his station in the water, but as a means of giving his signals.
