GENERAL HINTS

If chintz covers are washed in rice water instead of sdap, the colours will not wash out and no starch will be required. Boil 3lb. of rice in about 3 gallons soft water, and when cool wash the chintz; meanwhile boil a second lot of rice, strain, add i cup vinegar, rinse the fliiintz in this and iron before it is quite dry. Purple pencil-cargon marks can be removed from white linen by sponging with undiluted methylated spirit and then rinsing in water. No harm is done to the linen by this method. Before hemming new tablecloths or serviettes draw a thread near the edges by which to cut them straight. This will save trouble when ironing the cloths. Mutton fat melted and poured into a tin wall-lamp will stop any leaks. First empty the lamp of all kerosene. When putting away small girls’ bloomers between seasons, take out the elastic and put it in those in use. By next season the elastic will have either perished or weakened, and may be too small to fit the child. When making jam tarts, mix the jam with a little hot water before putting into the pastry. The tarts taste just as well, and the jam goes further. Aspirin will cure a dog of distemper. Give two each morning until symptoms disappear. When in need of a breakfast dish, make a nancake paste (eggs may be omitted), stir in the contents of a tin of meatpaste and fry in the usual way Linoleum will wear twice as long It the floor is sprinkled with fine dry sawdust before the lino, is put down. When making a plain raisin pudding add one finely-grated carrot instead of an esg. It is delicious. When making batter beat it thoroughly and allow to stand at least an hour before using: it will be much lighter than if used straight away.
