OCCUPATION TROOPS
"LITTLE THINGS” LEFT BEHIND Berlin, October 30. Like Kipling’s “Absent-minded Beggar,” the Rhineland occupying troops are apparently “leaving a lot of little things behind them.” The Radical newspaper, “Die Weltbuehne,” estimates that the British troops left eight thousand stranded babies. It alleges that the soldiers systematically evsded their obligations, in contradistinction to the French, who are voluntarily providing for their offspring. The British United Press’s Berlin correspondent, however, is officially informed that .the British troops behaved more decently than the French, who were most remiss. The most surprising allegation is that in proportion to their number the United States soldiers had the worst record. Unofficial estimates suggest that the total number of “occupation babies” is fifteen thousand.
