WAIRARAPA SHOW

JUDGING. OF HORSES AND DOGS LARGE ATTENDANCE ON PEOPLE’S DAY Dominion Special Service. Carterton, October 31. Fine weather again favoured the Wnirarapa P. and A. Society for the second day of their 53rd annual show, although towards afternoon the sky was overcast and rain threatened, while a heavy downpour occurred late in the afternoon, and most of the people had left the grounds by , 5 p.m. The ground was thronged early in the day, and in the afternoon, when most business premises in proximity to Carterton were closed, the attendance approached a record. The judges had another busy day, the chief section receiving attention being that of horses, which included ha.cks, stallions, horses to be ridden, ponies and harness horses, boys’ and girls’ ponies, and with more application to general utility, Clydesdales and farmers’ . and tradesmen’s horses. Results of judging in the cattle (milkers) class also came to hand, and judging was also done in the dog section, subdivided into working classes and kennel club classes. One of the chief attractions of the day as far as stock was concerned were the ring events, which included the championship jumping competition. Some line examples of purebred stock were to be seen when the grand parade commenced early in the afternoon, the sheep exhibits especially, being commented upon. The side-shows did a brisk business, and the motor exhibits, which include some of the latest farm implements and machinery, attracted a great deal of attention. Imported and Local Cheese. On exhibition in the produce hall were English, ■ Scotch, and Canadian cheddar cheese, forwarded for purposes of comparison with locally-made cheese by the New Zealand Produce Marketing Association. Experts gave their opinion that the Canadian cheese was a little overripe and therefore a little strong in flavour. It had good body and texture. The Scotch cheese had a fairly open texture, but had a particularly good cheddar flavour —it would be a popular cheese. The texture of the English cheese was closer than that of the Scotch, but its taste was a little sharp to the palate. Belvedere (Wairarapa) cheese on exhibition was of finest quality, as good in body and texture as the imported cheese, while it had a good cheddar flavour. Other cheese on exhibition was said to be as good as would be found anywhere in New Zealand, so that Wairarapa factories could be assured of recognition on the English market.
