NURSES’ HOURS AND CONDITIONS

MINISTER SYMPATHETIC An assurance that he was doing everything humanly possible to bring about an improvement in the hours and conditions of nurscse was given by the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Minister said that the primary responsibility rested with the hospital boards, who could frame by-laws as they deemed fit. He had made his attitude quite plain to the boards, and in some instances lie had had the privilege of authorising further expenditure' in order to provide better accommodation for nurses. It was impossible to bring about great changes in the course of a few months. It would take time to do all that should be done. Steady progress, however, was being made in the direction of improving the hours and conditions of nurses. Mr. Stallworthy added that he had in mind a scheme which would be tried out in one of the St. Helens Hospitals whereby the nurses would work an eighthour day with one day off a week. “I ani doing everything flint is humanly possible in this matter,” he said.
