At Carterton To,niprrow. . First-class acceptances were received for the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club at ClarevlHc on Saturday, only four horses out of the total entries failing to pay pp. 'Form in the Trial Plate rather points to Streamer and Pat’s Boy, while Ben Hyr may be an Improver. Tourist and Austerity will have a lot of friends in the High-Weight on their Wellington form, but Moepai cannot be disregarded and Make Up may be fancied. Rabbi lind Atholspear stand out in tile Count}' Cup, and with H. Gray up Rabbi will probably start a firm favourite. St. Melba ran a good race at Masterton Oi)d does not appear fo pc up against formidable opposition in the Carterton Hack Handicap. Shot Silk and Ben Hur look hip mogt dangerous opponents.Historic has a big weight-in the Bunny Mepiorial. Six fijrlongs may be too sport for him. but he begins well now, and cannot be ighored. If. Athdlspear'starts here he’ will be dangerous, w;hile Dobbin and Quantum pre a likely pair. A number of the hacks in the Taratnhi Handicap have form in their favour. The best is that of Austerity and Tourist, but Imateagir) should be ffiiijgerous. Several of the runners in the Maungaraki Handieap claim ’prior engagements, but if saved Atholspcar anff Ramescs should go well. Rpi ffe V|ll is a newcomer whose prospects are bright. Moutoa Treasury did not show her right form at Masterton, where Billion ran a good race. Possibly Roi de Vai and Billion may do best if Atholspeap is absent. The draw will likely affect thff result of the Electric Handicap, but the form of Banket and Hunting Boy stands out. High Society may be a possible improver,

Trentham Notps. Several visiting horses are still at Trentham waiting for transport to piecarton. Yesterday morning there was a good deal of interesting work, both the tan and the trial grass being used. On the grass Paganclli, with IT. Goldfinch up, ran half a mile in 48 l-ssee. Goldfinch will ride fiim in the Stewards if ’l’. Green is required for Goblin Alarket, . which indi? cates Hint Eaglet'is an unlikely starter. Shot Silk took fiOsee. for half a mile, and Streamer 50 3.ssee. ’ Goshawk and Hunting Cry ran six fur, longs comfortably in Imin. 21scc., the last half in 52sec. They will both go to Rier carton On the tan Quantum ran six fur, longs in Imin. 17sec. W. 11. Jones rides him at Carterton. Itoi de Val,> who is very well, ran six furlongs in Imjn. lb 3-ssec. Push was better than Footpad over a half in 51 l-ssee. Adiniral Drake ran the last six of seven furlongs in Imin. I'seo., the last half in .Msec. Tourist was not doing his best to run six furlongs it) Imin. L'Otscc. Concentrate. Oral, and white Fang did oasv work. Concentrate looks all the belter 'for his race in tile Harcourt Cup. Rabbi, who lias recovered from his soreness, did a working gallop with Make Up. Rgbbi will be ridden In the "alra. rapa County Cup on Saturday by H. GrayOn Wednesday morning Historic and in the Shade ran a mile in the middle of tllp Course proper in. Imin, 46see.

Chide nml the Cup. Chide continues to make good progress ip his work at Riccarton. G. Murray, Avnsley. the horse’s owner,trainer, lias

many critics (says the “Sun’*). Some contend that he overworks his team on the tracks, but it is well worth remembering that Aynsley has trained more winners or long-distance events than any other trainer in New Zealand. Moreover, unless his horses were fit they could not stand up to the work. When B. H. Morris rode Chide -to victory in the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin, he subsequently told the trainer that tjie Paladin gelding was one of the easiest horses he had ridden. The four-year-old is a beautifully-dispositioncd galloper, will go anywhere in a race, and seems never to be troubled. Chide s rider in the New Zealand Cup. A. 11. Eastwood, has not yet won an event like the big Riccarton two-miler. He certainly' has won the last two Telegraph Handicaps at Trentham, but they were only sprint events. However, Eastwood is very keen on Ch ide’s prospects, and he is leaving nothing to chance about his fitness. He is doing a lot of training, and on Cup day he should be able to give Chide every assistance. A Good Win. A racing coup on a small scale seems to have been brought off at the Waipawa County Racing Club’s meeting on Monday (says a Hawke’s Bay writer). Included in the twenty nominations for the Maiden Plate was Mr. J. Duggan’s b. g. The Budget, aged, by Starstream—St. Picbon, trained by the owner. Nobody knew anything about The Budget, and an aged horse jstlll eligible for a maiden plate did not proclaim him a champion. Starstreapi had been represented py qnly one or two performers on the turf, and though Propaganda did ptfy a big second dividend at Trentham on one occasion, most people had forgotten the namp of the sire, while the breeding of , his dam, St. Pichon,"might, in the words of Adam;Lindsay Gordon, have been described as a myth unknown.” The Budget, too, though looking fit,was anything , but a massive animal, and fewv people took auy notice of him.' A few pounds drifted in on him on the totalizator until twenty-fivp had been taken out on bis chance.' The Budget had won, paying a. dividend of close on a quarter of a century,, people went to the totalisator pay-out to see the lucky, ones draw their little pM®, but as only sis or seven people turned up for this purpose, and most of them seemed to hayc more than one ticket, it gradually dawned Upon the spectators that somebody knew more about The Budget than ihpy did, and that these few colonial treasurers” had a satisfactory, surplus from The Budget’s success. • ;

Prodice’s Win. . It was the general opinion that pie Members’ Memorial Handicap at the JV aikato Hunt meeting would prove easy for 1 rodice and she (July landed the odds laid oil her. ability te win,, although to be ridden right out at the finish, to score by two lengths from .Lady s Boy •.-(sa.Vs “Archer’- in the “Herald ). It would have peen mom pleasing tp her admirprs. if she. had scored m° rc convincingly, but she registered a smooth performance, and never Iddkcd like losing. Prodice will. be; improved by the race . and should be in., great heart when she tackles the New z oa-’ land Cup next month. She. iS : weighted .with 7.8 in the big rac? at Riccarton and her arc hopeful that she will race, prominently. Wiiether she will run out two miles solidly is for the future to revegl. If she can. win be dangerous, but I am doubtful whether she will prove a genuine stayer, notwithstanding that she has good handicap fopm to recommend her. Up.” j. There was some riding on the part of experienced jockeys at the Waipawa County Racing Cluji’s meeting on Monday that would hgvo been pretty ba<J even for very young apprentices (repprtg “ AaP' paper), In flip Jumpers Mat Handicap there were oplv four runners, but the riders of three of them cannot be given apy credit for their displays. The winner, Delude, who was favourite, was ridden an over the course. Cheeked twice in frying to get through on flic rails, he dropped back and came on the outside, only to be bumped and carried out wide at the home turn. Straightened pp. he Just got UP >n time to secure the verdict by a nose, lhe rider of Wilmoreana. after nearly bringing about Delude’s downfall at the ’’“ek of, the course, took advantage of Gold Meda goipg out at the home bend to got through on the rails, and then went to sleep. The rider of Rakauponga kept his mount in the rear of the field and then went on the outside and covered more ground than any of the others. In the straight. Rakauponga made a surprising, run and was leading fifty yards from, home, when the iockev plopped ridln.g. so that bolu He? hide 'and Gold Medal caught and bent him homo, Some of the disgusted backers of one of the competitors suggested tying sacks on the horses in future instead P £ putting jockeys up.

BUSY MORNING AT RICCARTON SOME INTERESTING GALLOPS Dominion Special Servick. Christchurch, October 81. The weather was again fine for, training operations at Riccarton to-day. Added interest was attached to the work by the opening of the course proper on the outside of trestles placed some 40ft. from the rails. The ground was hard and fast, but a good sole of grass made the going Very favourable.' The plough also was made use of, and some good times were registered on t- p. V. Mason’s team was out early, ; the majority being given strong work. Honour, with Swiftray as a companion, executed an attractive gallop over a mile on the course proper, in Imin. 45 l-ssec, and appeared to be going comfortably at the finish. Honour looks in better racing condition than was the case in Sydney. Praise was given slow exercise in the middle. She was taken to the barrier on Wednesday and sprinted .home five furlongs. She seems a natural galloper, but appears to be on the big hide as yet, sug? gesting that she may not be ready to tackle the Welcome Stakes. At the same time she is further advanced than Honour was at the game stage twelve months ago. and Honour registered one of the biggest surprise victories in connection with the event.

Jaloux and Pride were allotted a useful gallop over nine furlongs on the grass. They both went well, but were not out for time-making. Jaloux ran so well over ten furlongs in each of his races at Randwick that he has been left in the New Zealand Cup, and also figures in the Derby. He is a much improved gelding, and an important race cannot be put past, him. The Geisha beat Spoon over four furlongs on the grass in 50 2-ssec. The former is the better track worker of the two, but in each of the two races they had at Dunedin'. Spoon finished in front of her companfon. , Subdivision showed his usual speed by reeling off four furlongs on the plough in 49 l-ssec.

Honeycomb was doing much better thau Juniper over the final stages of a sixfurlong gallop, taking Imin. 17sec, Starshooter anti Netley <»vere*’ five furlongs on the grass in Imin. 4 3-ssec., the former finishing in front. Ah impressive gallop was accomplished by Disorder and Quarterdeck, who were abreast clear of Swoopalong at the end of nine furlongs on the grass, covered in Imin. sTsec.

Gpbliij Market jvas sent from the mile post on the grass. He took 54 3-ssec. for the first half, but ran home in 52sec. This gelding is in great fettle and will not want for admirers in the Stewards’ Handl' cap.

Hurly Burly reeled off a smart seven on the grass in Jmin. 31 l-ssec. Dutch Maney traversed fiye furlongs on the grass In lm>n. 2 l-ssec. without being allowed to dp her best.

' Satisfy/who seems to have suffered no ill-effects from the trip zto Wellington, sprinted three furlongs along the hack on tlfe grass in 38 2-ssee. King Musket, a likely Welcome Stakes candidate, strode over half a mile on the same track in 50sec.

Chide and Meprisajit were associated in .a mile and a quarter gallpp on the course, proper, The first Half? took 51 ?,-ssec., five fufJongs Imin,. 4sec.. sjx Imin. 17 3-5 sec., and the last half 54scc. Chide held hjs companion safe in the run home and was not ridden out to beat him by half a length. On the other hand, Meprisaufs rider was busy on him over the last furlong, but the gelding was unable to make ■much impression on the Cpp candidate, who completed ; his task in a ver,y encouraging manner. ' Airplane galloped .six furlongs on the plough jn imlh. IBsee., and his stablemate Sapient, assisted by Waihemo, covered seven furlongs on the same track in Imin. 33 2-Dpec. ‘‘ Thurso and Proud Knight recorded, Irnln. 4gpc, for fire fyrlopgs on the plough. . Count Cavour strode out well in a mile 1 gallop On the plough, taking Imin. 44 2-o S|ic.,' the last seven furlongs being covered in Imin, 80 3 : lssec. He is standing up tohis .strenuous preparation well, but all the same does not look a favourable Cup proposition'. Hp will racp at Motukarara pn Saturday. , _ ,s. Malfflsey. brought home by Royal Love, covered six furlongs on the plough m lm|n. 17 3-S.SPC. . , ■ „ Stately .was. again seen to advantage in a task .over a mile on the grass executed in 144 2-5. v . . v ' Prlckies f was restricted to a working gallop over seven furlongs on the plough. She is a doubtful starter at Motukarara. unless rain falls .in the meantime. Solgel? ran fire fprlongs on the grass jn train. 4sec. Sea Raid finished clear of Buoyant and Some Lad after covering six furlongs on the plough in Imin. 16 8-sbm. Kanalagh, with Bay Queen as’a mate for .three furlongs, strode over five furlongs on the plough in imin. ssee. •Miss Nightraid beat Moratorium over the same ground in train. 4pec. Pahautanui ran halt a mile on the plough in''up l-ssec., a similar performance being registered by Grand Acfe and NasstorL ■* Bulolo narrowly beat To Jwhln» our five furlongs on. the grass in train. 3see., after getting a big break at.the Bonrose and Coupon finished together at the end of half a mile in Slsec. The former look? a much-improved filly after her respite, and will make her reappearance at the Cup meeting. Age has made no difference to Coupon in the matter of 'behaviour, and although he can still gallop fast his owner will find it difficult to win races with him. Safety (R. J. Rickerby) and Toomyvara (E. Shaw) jumped four hurdles in a satisfactory manner, ami Pangolin (R. Shaw) gave a pleasing display in a similar task. ’ Red Heckle, ridden by his trainer, .executed half-pace work on the plough, He was taken to the barrier on M eilncgdaj, and with C. Emerson in the saddle covered five furlongs along the straight at a strong pace, He is very well at P' e s en ! : > and is one of the southern favoured dlvL sion for the Stewards’ Handicap. Mr. Gi Reed, of Christchurch, will officiate as starter at the Banks Peninsula meeting to-morrow. W. D, Maroney arrived at Riccarton today with Vcrtigern, Count Palatine, and Tenterden. In regard to Count Palatine, it is interesting to relate that his (lam Perarjna. shortly after the was born, anti hp ha<l to be reaped at the Kinloch Stud on cow’s milk.
