INCREASED SIZE OF LINERS THE NEW ORONTES The present addition to the fleet of the Orient Line of the Orontcs, built by Vic-kors-Armstrongs, Limited, well illustrates the progress which has been made in British shipping within a period of about a quarter of a century. The ship is named after a vessel belonging to the same owners, which was very popular in her time, and rendered fine service. The earlier Orontes was built In 1902, and was just over 9000 tons gross, with a horsepower of 10,000. The new Orontes is of just 20,000 tons gross, with a horse-power ot 20,000, so that the present ship is more than twice the size of her predecessor, while the horse-power is double. In the year before the'war lhe Orient Line owned a fleet ot nine sips, including six vessels which were comparatively new. It owns the same number to-day, but the total tonnage is very much greater. In .1913 the fleet consisted of six new ships of about’l2.ooo tons gross, and three of between 6800 and 9000 tons. To-day there are five vessels of about 20,000 tons, one of nearly 15,000 tons, and three of about l:\000 tons gross. The new ships of 20,000 tons, which, naturally, are very costly, have been found highly suitable for the route. Incidentally, the construction ot the now vessels was an important factor in the decision of the Port of London Authority to build the new lock at Tilburv, which was officially opened on September 26, and the new dry dock, the need of which for such vessels has been found to be urgent. WARNING TO NAVIGATORS. The secretary ot the General Post Office advises that the following navigation warning was broadcast by the Ruapehu at 6.20 a.m. yesterday:— “October 30, 1720 G.M.T. 40.00 south, 171.39 east, passed large tree trunk, about. 30 feet in length, waterlogged, and covered with barnacles; dangerous to navigation.” KEELUNG DUR ON WEDNESDAY. She is to clear Los Angeles on January 5 and is due at Auckland on January 29. TUTANEKAI RETURNS. From her round trip to the South Island lighthouses the Government steamer Tutanekai arrived back at Wellington at 5.15 p.m. yesterday. Captain Burgess reports that rough weather was encountered to the Bluff, but thence till arrival at Wellington ideal conditions prevailed. While in Milford Sound a number of men were landed to cut a second track overland to Milford Sound. When the vessel passed Cascade Point seals which were formerly plentiful there were completely absent. After leaving Westport the ship took soundings outside Westport to ascertain the condition of the bottom partly on account of possible changes due to the great earthquake, but a good even bottom and depth was found. Next Monday or Tuesday the Tutariekai will go out from Wellington to the Brothers and possibly one or two other lighthouses.
