WELLINGTON COLLEGES

BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS The Wellington College Board of Governors met yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. H. P. Barber presided, and there were present the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), Messrs. W. H. Field, M.P., W. Holsworth, T. Forsyth, G. Mitchell, Colonel H. E. Avery and Mrs. Kane. A deputation from the Wellington Girls’ College Parents’ Association waited upon the board regarding proposed alterations to the grounds. They proposed to shift a building at present used as a caretaker’s residence with a view to making additional tennis courts. The cost would be approximately £4OO. It was decided to meet the Minister of Education with regard to the matter. The Chief Justice (Hon. M. Myers), an old boy of the college, has accepted an invitation to be the principal speaker at the Wellington College prize day, which will be held on the evening of December 13. The Girls’ College will hold its prize-giving on the morning of the same day, and Wellington East Girls’ College will have its function on the previous evening. The boarding fees at Wellington College were raised from twenty pounds per term to twenty guineas, and those who stayed from Monday to Friday will next year be charged for at the rate of fifteen guineas per term instead of the fifteen pounds charged at present. The headmaster and the masters of the staff, who have been there for two years, shall be formed into a committee to select a boy from, the highest form in the college to receive the scholarship, points being awarded the various candidates for character, scholastic, and sporting attainments in the following proportions: Character, 50; scholastic attainments. 25: sporting attainments. 25. The scholarship, which will be offered every alternate year, will be tenable for a period of two years, provided that the holder remains at Wellington College, or at one of the colleges under the University of New Zealand. .Should the winner not fulfil the conditions, and the scholarship lapse, another boy may be given the award.

EAST GIRLS’ COLLEGE

Four new classrooms, each 24 feet square. are to be added to the Wellington East Girls’ College. They will be placed to the north of the existing front, and

the two classrooms on the ground floor will be connected with accordion doors. At the meeting of the College Board of Governors yesterday afternoon, a letter was received from the Director of Education (Mr. T. B. Strong) stating that it was realised that the East Girls’ College urgently required additional accommodation, and as little relief would be forthcoming next year from the Wallington Girls’ College, that it proposed to add the four extra rooms. The addition is the'result of a request to the Minister made some time ago, for more accommodaXjon.
