FUNERAL OF LATE MR, J. M. JOHNSTON

AN IMPRESSIVE TRIBUTE Palmerston North, October 30. The late Mr. John Moore Johnston, one of the most deeply respected men in the town, was laid to rest this afternoon. Tlie cortege which followed his bodj- to the Palmerston North Cemetery was tile largest ever seen in Palmerston North, and included representatives of all the many institutions and bodies in which thi late gentleman was interested. Four cat s followed the hearse laden with beautit tl floral tributes. A service at the residence of the late gentleman was, conducted by the Ilev. Woodward, of All Saints’ Church, who also conducted the service at the graveside. Messrs. J. H. P. Strong, W. Stevens, Gordon, Lyons, Hugh Johnson, Col. Whyte, and Dr. Putnam were the pallbearers at the residence. At the cemetery the following representatives of various institutions in which the late ’gentleman was- so actively interested were pall-bearers:—Messrs. Gibbs (Bank of New Zealand), S. W. Rapley (Manawatu Gentlemen’s Club), C. Louisson (Manawatu Racing Club), J. L. Linklater, M.P. (Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association), R. S. Abraham (Racing Conference), W. C. Griffiths (Racing Club), P. Lareombe (Manawatu Golf Club), B. J. Jacobs (Returned Soldiers’ Association). The following floral tributes from various organisations were laid upon , the grave (in addition therp were many private wreaths from friends of the deceased, and in all there were 150 wreaths) : —United Manawatu Lodge No. 1721, Manawatu Patriotic Society. Licensed Victuallers’ Association (Wanganui District Committee), Manawatu Club, Woodville Jockey Club, Wairarapa Racing Club, Awapuui Racing Club, Manawatu A. and I'. Association, exmembers Wellington Mounted Rifles, Auckland Racing Club, Wanganui Jockey Club, T, A. Hastings and gate staff, Awapuni Convent school children, Mayor and councillors and official staff of the Palmerston Borough Council, Conference of the N.Z. A. and P. Associations, Manawatu Hunt Club, stewards of the Gentlemen’s Chib, president and stewards of the Wellington Racing Club, employees of Post and Telegraph Department. Canterbury Jockey Club, Rangitikei Racing Club, Feilding Jockey Club, Marton Jockey Club. Ashhurst Racing Club, Dannevirke Racing Club. Manawatu Golf Club, Manawatu Trotting Club, Manawatu Racing Club, stipendiary stewards N.Z. Racing Conference. Messrs. Dempsey and Litchfield, staff of the A. and P, Association. Racing Club staff at Awapttni, president and members of New Zealand Racing Conference. Returned Soldiers’ Association, and staff of the Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd.
