WON ART PRIZE

SUCCESS OF NEW ZEALANDER

Scores of the best-known Australian artists entered for a competition promoted recently by the State Theatre, Sydney, with the co-operation of the '‘Sun," and nine money prizes were awarded. The first prize of £3OO was gained by Mr. Charles Wheeler, who belongs to a Dunedin family, his father being Mr. J. E. Wheeler, teacher of navigation. Mr. Charles Wheeler studied in the Melbourne National Gallery. He learned to paint under Mr. Bernard Hall and has made his name in figure work. He served four and a half years in France during the war and won the D.C.M. His winning picture is a fulllength study of the nude. The judges were: Mr. Sydney Ure Smith (president of the Society of Artists), Mr. W. Lister Lister (president of the Royal Art Society), Mr. C. Lloyd Jones and Mr. Stuart F. Doyle. They selected 400 pictures for the final examination before making their awards. Miss Mary Edwards, of Sydney, won the second prize of £l5O.
