CITY AIRPORT
USE OF LYALL BAY AREA DEFENCE LIMITATIONS Important limitations on the City Council’s use of the Lyall Bay area as an airport have been Imposed as a result of the amendments made to the Wellington City Empowering and Amendment Bill by the Local Bills Committee of the House of Representatives.
The use of the area for an aerodrome and general aviation purposes is to be conditional upon the Minister of Defence having the right at all times to the gratuitous use of the aerodrome for /lie landing and departure of aircraft of the Air Force, and the right to erect for th» exclusive use of members of the defence forces a hangar covering an area of 2000 square feet, in a position to be agreed upon by the General Officer Commanding the Forces and the city engineer. The area not used-for aviation purposes is to be reserved as a pleasure ground, subject to the right of the Defence Minister to select two acres to be enclosed for defence purposes, to the use of t’fi ground for ceremonial parades when events of national importance are being celebrated, and to the use of seven and a half acres for drill purposes on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
