KINGSFORD SMITH’S EAST-TO-WEST PROJECT
CAPABILITIES OF SOUTHERN CROSS CAN CARRY FUEL FOR FIFTY HOURS That Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith is to attempt the east to west Atlantic flight (from London to New York) in the Southern Cross seems to be placed beyond all doubt, according to a New York messoge published below. He estimates the Southern Cross can carry petrol to last 50 hours.

Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith conferred with the Wright officials today and told them the Southern Cross, with three engines, averaged about 32 gallons per hour on the trans-Pacific flight. • Kingsford Smith estimated he can make the England-United States flight on 1550 gallons of petrol in fifty hours, and stated he could easily rise with such a load. He added that he intends to use the two and a half-mile runway at the Royal Airfield at Cranwell to take off for New York.
