HISTORIC GROUND

PLEA FOR STATE PURCHASE

Government acquisition of the land on which the Treaty of Waitangi was signed was urged by speakers in the House of Representatives yesterday when the Scenery Preservation Esti mates were under consideration. Mr. H. M. Rushworth (Country Par ty, Bay of Islands) said that there was a monument on the other side of the river erected by the Maoris, but no monument had been erected by Europeans to commemorate the sign Ing of the Treaty. He thought it would be a good idea if the land was acquired and a suitable memorial erected.

Mr. T. Henare (Reform. Northern Maori) supported the suggestion. The Minister of Lands (Hon. G W Forbes) said he understood that the land was privately owned. There was a likelihood of it being purchased., how ever, when sufficient funds were available. He thought the suggestion was a good one and he assured the House that the matter would not be lost sight of.
