NINE MONTHS’ FIGURES

The births, marriages, and deaths registered in Wellington for the month of September approximate very closely in number to those of September, 1928, but there is a decrease of 66 births over the period, January-September, while deaths are only seven fewer. With regard to the death statistics It will be noticed that each year the number is smaller in the summer months, and the rise in the winter months possibly indicates a larger toll among elderly people. Marriages also fluctuate, except that March seems to be a more popular month than the others. The following are the comparative figures for the nine months of 1928 and 1929 :—

’ DUNEDIN FIGURES. During September (states a Press Association message) 147 birth, 90 deaths, and 62 marriages were registered in Dunedin. as compared with 134 births, 81 deaths, and 34 marriages for September last year. Returns for the September quarter and the corresponding quarter of 1928 are as follow: Births 394 (380). deaths 287 (271), marriages 175 (135).
