The Government steamer Tutanekai was brought off the patent slip yesterday, and berthed at the Ferry Wharf to complete her overhaul and repairs. The Union Company’s old steamer Walnut, which has been lying jn "Rotten Row” for some time, was towed to Julian’s Wall this morning to be stripped by shipbreakors. The hull has been sold to Mr. K. Shakespeare, and is to be used as a breakwater at Whangaparaoa. The Walnul was built in 1886, and was engaged for many years in the southern coastal trade. Site was in the AucklandGisborne trade from 1924 to 1927. She was then laid up and later purchased by the firm of Borlasc and McKay. In the nineties the Wailiui went ashore on the Beef Barrels, near D’Urville Island in Cook Strait, and bad to be beached in a nelglibouriutig bay uutil repairs were made. Twenty years ago, when the barque Waiiti was dismasted by capsizing in the Kalpara Harbour, the Wainul towed the sailer to Lyttelton. The Walnul will add one to the number of old Union Company steamers to end their ’days as a breakwater, others being the Monowai, Talune. Te Anau, and Wellington. Negotiations have been opened by a southern firm tor the purchase of the Union Company’s wooden steamer Tuatea (112 tons), which is at present being used as a tug on Auckland Harbour. The prospective buyers are whalers at Tory Channel, who wish to use her to bring in whsrti- killed in Cook Strait to their trying-out work*.

RANGITIKI COMING OVER 500 PASSENGERS On board th» New Zealand . Shipping Company’s motor liner Rangitlki, which left England last week on her second voyage to the Dominion, there are over 500 passengers. The big ship, which sailed from Southampton on Friday, September -7’ for Auckland and Wellington, via Madeira and the Panama Canal, has 109 first saloon, 90 second saloon, and 307 third-class—a total of 506 passengers. The first and second class accommodation Is about fully booked, and the third-class is a very big list for the present time, when practically no “assisted” Immigrants are coming to the Dominion. When the Rangitlki left Wellington last May on the homeward passage of her maiden voyage, she carried 105 first saloon, 91 second saloon, and 250 third-class —total 446 passengers. Thia was the largest number of passengers ever carried in one ship on the direct service from New Zealand to England. Rangitlki is due at Madeira to-day, at Colon on October 11 or 12, and at AuciU land on October 30 or 31.

THE PIAKO REPORTS. The Federal Company have received a wireless message from the Piako, en route from Liverpool, stating that the vessel will arrive at Auckland at noon on Thursday. She is due at Wellington next Friday week.

PORT VICTOR FOR GENOA The C. and D. Line report that the Port Victor will sail from Dunedin this afternoon for New Plymouth and Auckland to load meat for Genoa. Sho will proceed to Italy via Australia. REMUERA DUB AT AUCKLAND.

MONDAY. The New Zealand Shipping Company received a wireless message yesterday from their liner Renfuera stating that she will arrive at Auckland next Monday from London and Southampton. The vessel is expected at Wellington a week later. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain L. Larsen, who has been on sick leave, has resumed command of the Cygnet, Mr, A. R. Pryde reverting to his former position as mate of that ship. CANADIAN CRUISER DUE FRIDAY. The Canadian Cruiser arrived at Auckland at 5 a.m. yesterday from Montreat The vessel is expected to arrive at Wellington on Friday morning. T 5 THE KARAMEA. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advise that the Karamea will now not leave Wellington until 5 p.m. to-morrow for Auckland to fill up. Her departure from Auckland for London and West Coast of Great Britain has been postponed until next Tuesday. LIVERPOOL TO TIMARU. The Federal Company advise that the Cumberland, which is to leave Liverpool on November 23, will bring cargo to discharge at Timaru, In addition to Auckland, Wellngton, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff. PORT MELBOURNE TO LOAD. The C. and D. Line advise that the Port Melbourne, now completing discharge at Port Chalmers, will load there and is to sail on Thursday to load at Timaru, Lyttelton, New Plymouth, Auckland, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. The vessel •will leave Wellington on October 22 for London, via Montevideo. PAPANUI DUH TO-DAT. A wireless message was received yesterday by the Federal Company from the Papanui, en route from Liverpool, via Auckland, stating that the ship would arrive at Wellington early this morning. The vessel is to berth at the Plpitea Wharf to unload part cargo. '• OTOKIA REPORTS. The Union Company has received a wireless message front the tanker Otokia reporting that she expects to arrive at Wellington on Saturday from San Luis Ohispo. The vessel brings fuel-oil for discharge Into the company’s tanks at Miramar.
