INSURANCE FOR LOCAL BODIES
BILL TO BE INTRODUCED The introduction of legislation authorising the creation of a Dominionwide municipal insurance co-operative scheme was promised by the Prime Minister when replying to a deputation from the executive of the Municipal Association, which waited on him yesterday morning. The Bill, which is to be introduced, will, it is understood, establish the Municipal Association as a co-opera-tive body, and will give it the power to arrange its own insurance. It is expected that considerable savings will be made by the local authorities who participate' in the scheme, since all classes of Insurance will be pooled, and there will be the right to effect re-in-surance, as a precautionary measure, in cases where large amounts are involved, as, for instance, on a policy covering a town hail or other large building. “Well, gentlemen,” said Sir Joseph Ward, “from the way in which you have explained the matter, it is clear that the responsibility for what is proposed is not on the Government, but on the municipalities. The Government will take the Bill up and put it through for you.”
