STATE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Sir, —According to the law, State education in New Zealand is “secular,” and I wish to protest against what appears to be a violation, in intention, of that law—if the Minister of Education is correctly reported in to-day’s issue of your paper, as saying that the intention of the new syllabus is that children should discover some part of the “wonderful plan of creation," thereby gaining an “increased love and reverence for the Creator.” Such an intention is definitely “religious,” and there are many indeed who would strongly submit that a “study of nature” does not lead to love and reverence for a Creator, and that there is no evidence at all of any “plan of creation.” The Minister’s statement of educational intention is the giving of a religious interpretative bias, and is violating the principles of “secular” education. It is to be hoped that the State Education Defence League will draw the Minister’s attention to this fact. —I am, Pl “PROFANUM VULGUS.”
